What do you get when you cross
the thrilling sport of Polo, the excitement of Thoroughbred Racing
and great dancing music? "Thoroughbred Thursdays"
This mini-season for three Thursday evenings in August (10th,
17th,and 24th) is the result of a collaboration between the
San Diego Polo Club and the Del Mar Racetrack. Guests are first
treated to a polo match, which is then followed by world class
Jockeys and Trainers competing at Del Mar who mount up for some
fun and recreation for several chukkers of play. ( A chukker
is a seven-minute period of play.)
Food
and beverage concessions are available, everything from elegant
field-side dining to several snack options. The music then
cranks up to the wonderful sound of both the Heroes on August 17 and the Mar Dels
on August 10 and August 24 for a fun evening of conversation
and dancing. Patrons
and owners from both of these top class equine facilities join
together to celebrate their common bond, the Thoroughbred Horse.
The general admission cost
for the event is $5.00. The
Thoroughbred Thursday events will take place at the San Diego
Polo Club located at 14555 El Camino Real, San Diego, CA 92067.
There are a number of local
and international celebrities that are drawn to both polo and
horse racing, so the event is charged with the material to make
it the place to be on Thursday evenings in August. Last year,
famed comedian Tim Conway sat in along with jockey star, Alex
Solis to provide the comic commentary for the jockey trainer
competitions on the kick-off Thursday.
The buzz on this event was
deafening as the momentum doubled each of the three consecutive
weeks. There was a good deal of disappointment from the North
County community when the event came to a close, so there is
already a build of excitement for the second annual presentation.
The polo club kicks off
with a six chukker competition from the United States Polo Associations
National Rossmore Cup tournament at 6 pm. This
is a prestigious event with teams combining club members with
top professionals from all over the world. The camera then turns
to the Jockeys and trainers at 6:45pm as they arm themselves
with polo mallets and take the field of battle. As the sun drops
into evening the Player's Club steps up the action with a post
game celebration. Don't miss this opportunity to dance under
the stars with our stars for three wonderful Thursdays.
Both the Racetrack and the
Polo Club are also supporting "Inner City" a wonderful
program steered by Joe Biggers. The program consists of several
summer day camps, where children are introduced to the polo pony
and various activities and then move down the street to the Racetrack
to be hosted for lunch and a close up view of Thoroughbred horse
racing.
