I knew Artie Cameron, Sr. for 13 years. When I moved back to Santa Barbara from the East Coast, I made my 'polo home' at Rancho Carinoso and grew to know and love Artie with all his unusual quirks and sayings. Sitting around
the picnic table after a day of 'Artie Polo' and having a few sodas and laughing about the day was beyond heaven. Artie even gave out trophies to the winning teams! Hell, he handed you a trophy just for showing up and trying... if your horse couldn't go another chukker, he had his groom's saddle up one of his so you could finish the game. I probably own about 20
or so silver trophies from Rancho Carinoso, and will always treasure them. I knew Annie Cameron well back then and played with her on a team 'sponsored' by Artie down in the Desert. He wanted us girls to have a great time- he
even supplied all the horses and grooms so we could compete in the Debbi Dollar Memorial Tournament. Sometimes he would call early in the morning to check on 'his team' to see to it that we would be up and practicing; unaware
that we might of had a little too much fun the night before in the local bars- it was always a really funny scene, who would pick up the phone ... we were in awe of Artie, just so thankful of everything he did for us ... total respect and gratitude. We all watched 'little Artie' grow up and eventually beat us all on the polo field. So, Artie from me and in memory of you and
all you did for the old girl's team here goes:

May your dawns be filled with walks through the cool mist of the ocean breeze atop Rancho Carinoso

May your days be filled with fast horses, lush green polo fields and good
friends

May your dusk's be filled with the amber sky looking out toward the Channel
Islands, the scent of jasmine filling the air

May your nights bring you the big, bright starry skies of Santa Barbara

May the crisp night air bring you restful sleep and sweet dreams. Dreams of
laughter, fast and fun polo with no rules.
Dreams of what mischief and wonder
the next day will bring...

May that ever-present twinkle in your eye never, ever dim.

Sweet dreams Artie. You are a true original. They broke the mold with you ... and wow, did all of us have fun hanging out with you. Your memory will always make me smile and long for the days when you were here to make everything sparkle.

With friendship and affection,
Elizabeth Anne Dowling

Artie was a guy you could be good friends with. Whether you knew him for one day or one year. It didn't matter. Many of us think that it wasn't his time, but he made good of everday he had. He was funny and one of the best men with kids you could find. If you weren't the best polo player out there, he worked with you and made you believe you were. Every time the Junior polo players were on the field playing ,you could count on him to be there. Artie always remembered a face and a name and somehow put them both together. Artie was a great man, there will never be another just like him. " -- Doug Blumenthal and Jesse Bray

Thanks from many for doing the memorial on Artie. He certainly deserves it!
I will miss him dearly....

I was very sorry to hear of Artie. I didn't know him well, but he was always very kind to me. With him, there was always an invitation to kindness. He had time for everyone. He was the epitome of warmth and it's quite hard to forget when you meet someone like that.

Many thanks for your reply and assistance in honoring a long time polo
friend, Artie Cameron.

I have known Artie well before he even knew me when I watched him and his son, Artie Jr., play at the Eldorado Polo Club in my earlier polo days. I
watched him with admiration and could not help but observing the fatherly affection he displayed as he was giving good advice and kind instructions to his son in between the chukkers. It warmed me particularly as I have enjoyed
that similar relationship with my children. Over the years, his love for the game of polo was evident by his natural and effortless display of feelings and enthusiasm for the game every time we talked. These similarities we had
produced a special relationship between us in a very unique way.

I had an occasion to play on his field at Santa Barbara with a group of friends from the California Polo Club. I will never forget the good time we shared on the field playing with Corky against Jose Soto's team while Artie was officiating. All the time he was giving instructions, with excitement and
passion, to the players who needed just that extra boost. We had a nice picnic after the game at his camp ground with delicious wine and asada. Artie was such a gracious host he made our trip a totally pleasant and unforgettable experience.

Artie will always be a part of my fondest memories in the game we both love
so much. It is my honor to have known him, an unforgettable friend.
