Polo Report -Oct. 2002 |
October 27, '02:
Polo Where? Well the
Angels are world champs, it's snowing in Canada and the Silver
Cup still belongs to Windsor Capital because the only silver
this year is a silver river headed to the gulf of Mexico. As
the rain Gods want to keep all fire danger down in south Texas.
They should have brought it to Deer Creek Polo Club which is
not quite as famous in the town of Cochella, CA.
Las Vegas is history and the
devils are coming with the ghosts on Thursday night and the polo
world needs to wake up in California. The clock was turned back
last night and here are some of my ideas.
California had a lot of great
men involved in polo that's why we have it Here. Some are still
here and doing well, but they will not agree with my ideas, but
this not unusual. Many of the famous men took the polo out of
the club house and made it happen in the bunk house. They put
the cowboy flavor into polo. Men like Will Rogers, Willis Allen
, the late Mr. Carlton Beal and many others. They made it happen,
but today with all the media and quick communication we should
put the Hollywood back into polo and make it a little more like
the sport of kings.
Polo is a sport for the rich
and that's the way it is! So lets put the touch on this and start
at Eldorado, the biggest club in the nation. Isolate field 1
from the rest of the Club, which is not that hard or expensive
to do. Make it a show place. Put up the tents , put on the silver
and the dresses and see what happens. Have valets , player tents
, changing rooms, hit the press and make it a show. If we can
draw a crowd maybe we can cut some costs for the clubs and patrons
. Give us some ideas and make it happen. The Anaheim Angels did
and polo has never been that far behind .
We need promo ideas, we need polo players and we need fans. We
need to make a big move to help the West be a polo bonanza. We
could use a L.A Equestrian Center, the birthplace of 80 % of
the California polo players. We have California Polo Club and
their trying, but we need to help them so they can help us. Polo
people need to help polo people to have more polo. Tell us how,
why and where and maybe we will get there.
See ya at polo. Steve
Crowder.
Where
... When... What....
....Do You Want To Play Polo?
In the desert at Eldorado in
California?
In Sarasota, Florida?
In Boca Raton, Florida?
In Palm Beach, Florida ?
In the arena in Chicago, Greenwich, L.A. or Poway Polo Club in
CA or in San Diego?
Jan., Feb., Mar. or April
2 goal, 8 goal, 12 goal, 20
goal, or 26 goal
Do you need a 0 goal or a 10
goal player? They are all for hire, so do not retire from the
worlds fastest most dangerous, thrilling and exciting team sport.
We think polo is going to be
big in 2003 as there seems to be a wide open race to get to the
top. We will help make the path for you where ever it is you
need to be. Prepare to hear the sound of thundering hooves and
the smack that says you hit the plastic so h-a-r-d and f-a-r
and the polobarn.com is your guide to it all. Let us help you
make it happen. It is so e-a-s-y all you have to do is put on
your boots and sign your name.

21, '02: In the East
it was soon to be 10-goal Adam Snow vs. soon to be 9-goal Julio
Arrelano in the finals in Aiken South Carolina. In South Carolina
they sold a bunch of horses and reports were 60 % sold for an
average price of $8600, so that sounds pretty good. They say
Chava Gonzalez turned down $18,000 for a horse he just broke
and I thought the hay business was good! The highest price sale
was around $22,000 for a made horse.
In the great state of Texas
(Houston) it was a little wet to play yesterday even on the best
fields in North America. California buzz Ms. Abby Riggs joined
Isla Carroll sending another California guy out, Peter Ganibi.
Guess what they sank? The sub-commander, Old Pueblo, as they
blew too many shots at goal. Big John Goodman beat Big John H
which gives them a lead to take on ERG, the Texas-open winners.
The race is on and it is San Saba and Old Pueblo looking for
the inside track and they need to get it this week.
Out West they are cooking pigs
in Petaluma and fixing the dice in Las Vegas as they wait to
see what happens in the Road Runner and Go Honey which are ready
to hit the big time at the new renovated fields at Eldorado in
Nov. If you want the best team for the November tournaments

Terror In The Desert After Dark
By Steve Crowder
It was 7:00 PM on Friday night
when I got the call (Eldorado '02 season). I think you have some
horses out. It was not a cold night, but there was no moon at
all and pitch black outside. I grabbed by keys and headed to
for the door. I drove straight to the pasture looking for a broken
fence, none to be found. Shined my lights in the pasture and
got a cold knot in my stomach. Not a horse in my headlights no
matter where I looked. I headed for the road with a fast heartbeat,
I knew there were some people from the Club looking for them.
I received a number of calls during this time. I had just arrived
at the farm entrance, when I saw the farm manager. He had just
heard there were horses on the highway. We looked both ways and
all we could see were headlights to the North, Police lights
to the West and thought OH MY. As other cars blazed by going
to town or wherever, it was Friday night. Just as we tried to
figure out what to do, we heard the sound of thunder and it wasn't
a settling sound. It was 240 hooves hitting the pavement and
the road shoulder. You could not see a damn thing, just hear
the noice. About 10 seconds later the headlights picked up the
shinning eyes which look absolutely terrifying where there are
120 of them bearing down on you. We started screaming, waving
our hands and most of all hoping there were going to turn and
they did. It was like "Wow, what luck." What a lucky
night it was. First to have someone on the road who knew they
were horses and they should not be going to town without a trailer.
He turned them back and another went for help. Someone else called
me and others stopped cars and still others kept turning them
back and just like a miracle we were in the right place to turn
them into the Farm. If you ever want to feel fear, just buy 60
horses and turn them out in the pitch black with farms, fences,
irrigation pipe, water wheels and 30 or 40 cars flying down the
highway. Then try to be calm. I newver want to be near it again,
but I do want to THANK THE PEOPLE WHO HELPED US. THANK YOU
VERY MUCH!I hope I am there when you have trouble or need
a hand. Thank you from The Fat Boy with many horses. (Steve Crowder)

The Sun Has Set On 2002
- It's all over, but the crying. 2002 is in the books that is
and it was the Canadian's, Mecari, closing the door as they took
the last cup in Santa Barbara and put it on the table as Lee
Pettigrew just plays to win and he did again. The Palimino (Jason
Crowder), Mighty Mikee and the Surfer (Diego Cossio) did a tap
dance on Gehache and finished it all with their usual trademark
"kick the hell out of them early, then rest and beat them
up again." Not a problem.
It was a repeat of the last
3 games as the boys of Mecari just say hi and then good'bye and
its time to turn out the lights because the party is over. It
just seems like there might be a encore, but it just does not
happen. It was Mecari by 4 after 1, Mecari by 4 after 2, Mecari
by 2 at 3, Mecari by 1 after 4, Mecari by 2 after 5, and Mecari
by 3 after 6. That is just the way it was. Gechache played well,
but they just ran into a bad situation. They had to play Mecari
and this is a bad thing because they are a 7 goal team going
to 10 and that's just not a good idea. Mighty Mike sometimes
Mini!
Mikee showed he was Mighty today and the Palomino made 4 of the
first 5 and the Surfer just told them which wave to ride and
they caught it. It was a great season in Santa Barbara and there
were a lot of people for the final day which was very ugly, foggy,
cold and just not nice. It was a very good season. With a little
field maintenance, it will be the place to be again come next
year.
There is still the Go Honey
and Road Runner at Eldorado Polo Club in Indio, CA in November.
so be there.
We want to see you at POLO!
--Steve Crowder Oct. 7th. '02: Western Badge was the top dog in town for the
month of September, but it all came falling down like leaves
in October. The Canadian Man hit town with Mecari, a brand new
team and a brand new law force. The Surfer (Diego Cossio) at
the controls with the Palomino (Jason Crowder) at full throttle
and Mighty Mike Matz on patrol. Lee Pettigrew just says hit it
boys, we gotta go and go they did. Their first weekend in town
and they beat up the Argentine badges on Saturday, who won the
first 2 tournaments, and then spanked Rocket Rooney and big Danny
Walker on Sunday. Mecari head to the finals come next Sunday
at 3 PM.
Saturday the weather was perfect
and so was the polo. There was plenty of it. To open the day
it was Grants Farm taking on Uncle Henry and Matt and they just
barely beat Ms. Christine and A.B. to win by 1. Then Grandpa
Ken and Big D came from 4 goals down and beat Mr. Kazmark and
group in O.T. with Grandpa Ken who scored the last 3 goals. He
is a Grandpa, he is 76 YEARS OLD AND he is as TOUGH AS RAWHIDE.
In the twilight game it was the Badges getting fired from the
top spot by Mecari.
Sunday it started early and finished late. Grants Farm lost their
Pretty Lady in the 3rd. Ms. Christine broke her sexy nose and
Mr. Lande and Shellar took home the +. Today at 1 p.m it was
the Badges taking on Mr. K and boys. It was a dandy as they never
lost track of each other until there was sudden death and the
badges put it away to put the Mecari boys in the finals, but
they won't know who until next Sat. as Lande and company meet
uncle Henry and Blue Ridge. It all looks like this.:
Grants Farm 0 - 2
Nextgen 0 - 2
Blue Ridge 1 - 0
Long Beach 1 - 1
Gehache 1 - 0
Western Badge 1 - 1
Mecari 2 - 0
In the wet state of Texas Old
Pueblo is at 2 & 0 and on their way to the finals. It looks
to be ERG and the Spinach Man, but they still have to finish
their 2nd game. I hear it was a little wet in south Texas last
night.
Oh and Mr. Matt Gonzalez was
a big winner last week as they beat them all to win the 16-goal
in Columbus, Georgia. Matt is getting peachy on us.
See ya at polo soon. It is
almost over for 2002. Oct. 4, '02: TEXAS: WELL
it's time for Texas and we are not there, but polo is and its
on the best fields in the U.S.A. compliments of John Hall &
John Goodman. It is polo time in the Lone Star State as they
have $ teams going for the Texas Open and some have a California
flavor. Old but young Pablo Spinachi was on the winning team
for the first game of the Texas Open and played very well. His
team beat Isla Carroll in the first game and today it was John
Hall's Old Pueblo stopping Tommy Lee's team in a nail biter to
get in the plus section. Its a round robin so it will be a while
before we see who is in the finals.
Artie Cameron went down to
show a little S.B. flair and will be in action soon. We wish
him well and bring home the silver. Some Ca. people there are
Pablo Spinachi, Artie Cameron and last but not least the best
young player in North America Jeff Hall, who called home Carpinteria
from diapers to deadly at 7 goals. We wish them all well.
Things are quiet on the western front as the only action around
now that S.D. is over is the 8 goal in S.B. for next two weeks.
The Palomino (Jason Crowder) and Mighty Mike join up with the
Surfer Diego Cossio to look for more winning ways as they drew
tough and played the Western Badge who won the first 2 tournaments
third fall so we will see.
See you at polo manana in S.B.
