USC Falls to Westmont, 9-7

January 26th, '03: The University of Southern California men’s team fell to Westmont College 9-7 in a hard-fought collegiate game last weekend. The two teams were well-matched, and the score was often tied as the players battled it out under a blazing sun at Santa Barbara Polo Club.

New rules have been established on the west coast, limiting the number of teams that can compete at the Western Regional tournament in Rancho Murieta in late February. USC has one more chance to qualify for the regional tournament in a southern California mini-tournament next weekend. USC has to defeat the University of San Diego and UC Davis to win a seat in the regional competition.

Westmont is now eligible to attend the regional tournament along with Stanford University. The Northwest region will add another team to the competition, for a total of four teams vying for a position in the men’s National Intercollegiate Championship tournament.
