Topic: Update on Lillian Heller
Lynn Bremner

September 18, 2005 7:25 P.M.

Lillian Heller had an accident on the track today (Sunday Sept. 18th) at the San Diego Polo Club. Her horse tripped and rolled on top of her. She is still unconscious and is not awake yet. The last report was that she has no broken bones. She has a serious head injury and the doctors are keeping her asleep while she recovers. I will try and post reports on her progress as I receive them. Our thoughts and prayers are with Lillian and her family.

Was she wearing a helmet?

How come I just KNEW that was going to be the first question?? Great job with the compassion! She deserves support, not being another chapter in your book!

Lillian, our family’s thoughts and prayers are with you. Get well soon!

Yes, she was wearing a helmet and wears one everytime she rides.

The last report I've receivedd is that on a scale of 1 to 20 (20 being the worst) she is a 3. They believe once they let her out of the coma slowly, she should come out ok.

I will provide more reports as I receive them.

Dear Members,

Yesterday morning, Lillian Heller had an accident on the track at the polo club. She is now at Scripps Memorial in La Jolla and will have a CAT-SCAN today.

Lillian's family has been inundated with phone calls from the polo community. They are grateful for your concern, but they do not wish to be contacted during this very difficult time.

Sept. 18th, ’05: Lillian Recovering – Sunday, Sept. 18th was a very rough day and it was actually a very nice Sunday Morning with lots of polo being played. An avid polo player & fan, Lillian Heller, was out riding a young horse (about 3 yrs. old) and got in a mess with it. Lillian was injured badly and it was the end of a very nice day. We hear she is seemingly doing well and does, as I last heard, not have a lot of pressure on her brain from swelling, which is very good as this always seems to magnify the problems. To her credit Lillian always rode with a helmet, something most of us do not do. We all hope the best and give our best to her family: Eddie, Jamie and Mikee as they get through this terrible time.

September 20, 2005 09:28 A.M.

I'm a new comer to the polobarn site & don't know Lillian personally, but I feel for her family during this difficult time. May god be with you

September 20, 2005 09:47 A.M.

Crowder mentioned in his report about Eddie, Jamie and Mikee. I'm not trying to be disrespectful, but I was just wondering, are these her kids? Husband? Sister? I don't know the Heller family & was just wondering who exactly it is that I am praying for. Thank you.

September 20, 2005 09:48 A.M.

Eddie is her husband and Jamie and Mikee are her children.

I think of you many times every day and hope so much, Lillian, that you open your eyes soon and ask what happened and when you can get home and back to normal..... However, I also know we have to have lots of patience right now - which is difficult, because I want you to be OK now! I wish you a full recovery and I want you to know that you and your family will continue to be in my thoughts and prayers every day.

Looking at all the posts here, it must be comforting to Eddie, Jamie and Mikee that Lillian has so many friends praying and pulling for her recovery. We know that she will get better, she's just taking her sweet time about it. I'm just waiting for her to open her eyes and say, "ok, now I'm ready to come and watch the Spreckels finals with you all" in that wonderfull accent of hers.
We love you Lillian.

Hi Bobby,

Thanks for posting your note. I'm glad you have been able to read the posts and share them with your family.

Everyone at the Club has been asking about Lillian daily, but not all of them have access to a computer or this message board. We are all praying for Lillian. The polo community is like a second family to many of us. Lillian is part of our polo family and we are all here for her and want to help in any way we can. So please don't hesitate to ask any of us for help. If there is anything special you want to post on this site or if you have information you would like to get out to the polo community, just let me know.

Dear Lillian and all her Family, I came across some footage of club chuckers last year and I would like to forward a copy to you when the time is appropriate, lillian as usual was kickin but scoring goals. I had a choice this week to play my finals for spreckles, although I had a 102 temp and had not been on a horse for a week my ego almost got in the way, but I thought about Lillian and I and a conversation we once had, rather advice she gave me last year." Don't play if you don't have your balance and wits about you it's not worth it'. So Thanks Lillian I heard you that day and I listened. I pray every day for all of you, always on my mind hugs Alisha

Our thoughts and prayers have been with you and Lillian everyday. Everyday we are praying for Lillian. Becky, Adam, and Hannah go to school each day and at Solomon Schechter and say a prayer for Lillian. Our words can not express how deeply saddened we are and concerned we are for Lillian and all of you. We are staying in-touch via Ira & Debbie & Joe. I (Susan) am so happy that last winter we spent two weeks together and I was able to get to know all of you. I finally was able to really sense the closness of the Weinstein-Heller relationship and it was such a sense of completness regarding that everyone still felt close to each other etc... I spent a lot of time with Lillian and really got to know her well. David loved the time he spent with you a few weeks ago.
Again we are thinking about you in our hearts, thoughts and prayers.

Though we've never met Lillian, my children and I know, love, and respect Reva and Gene Heller. Reva and I have spoken many times of Lillian's love of horses and riding, as my daughter and I share the same passion. Being a "horse" family, we understand and accept the inherent injuries that go hand-in-hand with the sport. Or at least we think we do. It's never easy learning of a rider's mishap. It is especially discomforting when it is a "family" member. My children and I send our positive thoughts and prayers to the Heller family and Lillian's speedy recovery. Dearest Reva and Gene,
Although we knew that your daughter was injured, we thought that you needed your privacy, so we didn't probe too deeply. Lenn and Roberta told me tonight that you would appreciate me (Susan) passing on the word to your Hadassah friends about your daughter's condition and how to contact you (through the website). I will be happy to do so, so just post a note when you have a chance if you wish me to send a note to them. We miss you both and hope that your daughter is healed quickly and well. Please give our good wishes to your daughter (as I'm sure she's listening to every word you say) and her family.
Love to you both,

I keep thinking of you and praying for your full recovery. On Sunday I will be riding my horse on the exercise track in San Diego where your accident happened. I keep checking this site every day and notice how global your prayer and support base is getting. All for good reason I am sure, because the power of prayer is very strong and I have faith that you will be back with us soon, Lillian. I continue to send my support and prayers to all your family. Great news! Today Lillian took a major step in her recovery. She opened one eye. She did this several times in response to requests by the doctors. She even seems to have a bit of tracking in the eye as well. All this is fantastic news and gives us all a great deal of hope and encouragement that her recovery will continue. Thank you again for all your thoughts and prayers. We will keep everyone posted on all her progress.

It is the "Season of our Joy" another name for the Jewish holiday we are currently observing. How appropriate that during this week Lillian is improving so dramatically. It is a holiday about finding G-d in the simple things of life. What a HUGE day Lillian had yesterday! In the morning, she had physical therapy with lots of leg and arm extentions. She napped a bit and later, the speech therapists came in and explained to Lil that that they were going to put a cap on her trach tube so that she would be able to speak. She took some deep breaths and said "O.K." just as clear as can be! The room erupted in spontaneous applause and Lil's eyes lit up and she flashed a big smile! The therapists asked her if she would like to sing a song with them and again, there was a resounding "O.K." She sang "Happy Birthday" and the "A.B.C." song several times and built her voice with each go around. Later in the day, Mom was updating Lil on Dan's Jimi Hendrix project and she told her that Dan was in touch with Kris Kristofferson for the film and Lillian's face lit up like the Las Vegas strip! I kid you not! She said "WOW!" and then I told Lil that Gay and I had gone to Chicago for one day to see U2 at the United Center and through her smile and twinkling eyes she said, "Cool. I want to go too." Now you have to picture Lillian wide awake with Mom on the left side of the bed (that would be Lil's left) and me on the right. She's sitting up and moving her head from left to right as we each regail her with stories. I wish everyone could have been there to see Lillian awake and jabbering away. I told her how sweet her dog Roxy is and that she's extra cute when she's splayed about and sleeping on top of the couch. More big smiles! Mom asked me to tell Lillian one of my dog stories so I told her that Sasha is keeping me awake every night now. We go through a ritual. Each night as I'm just falling into deep sleep, (usually around 12:30) I dream that hear the light clicking of a dog's nails on a hardwood floor coming from one end of the house to my bed. "It's just a dream," I say. Then I hear the feet on the floor right next to me and I open an eye and there in the darkness six inches from my face stands Sasha, dancing in place. "Okay, sweetheart. Let's go," and I stumble out of bed and stub my toe on the way to the door. I let her out and no sooner than I get in my cozy bed, I hear Sasha scratching the door to get in. This dance goes on three to four times each night. Lillian liked the story.

Again, I cannot thank you all enough for your good wishes and prayers and for taking the time to post on this site. Mom has been with Lillian every day since September 19th and she prints your postings and reads them to Lillian. Lynn, thank you so much for making it available to everyone.

All my love,

Lillian;
I just read about how well you are doing and Dudley and I are thrilled! We have been keeping track and praying daily. I just read the "dog story" that Bobby posted. I have a similiar one. Lillian, hopefully, you remember my Jack Russell Terrier, Annie. I used to bring her with me to watch polo when I wasn't playing. Anyway, we are in Wyoming right now and it is very cold (20's & 30's) at night. I will be sound asleep. Annie will walk on my stomach up to my chest and stick her nose to my nose and make little grunting noises. I pretend to be asleep still, hoping she will give up and go back to sleep but noooooo, she grunts louder and, if needs be, licks my nose (which she knows I hate) I finally let her out, she does her obligatory sniffing and walks into the darkness. There are a couple of really huge owls that roost around our house so I stand (freezing) at the door, waiting......... then she will give me one quick bark, at which ever door she has decided to return to. We race each other back to my bed and snuggle deep into my down comforter. Her ears are always very cold. But at least her feet are not wet.......the grass is frozen stiff! I will continue to pray, but thanks be to God, for his hand is helping you along. Blessing to all of your family! hugs, tata for now.....

I'm responding to Anne's request for funny stories. When my husband Joel was first diagnosed with cancer, Lillian told me about humor therapy; watching funny movies, reading funning books, listening to funny stories, as a way to improve your mood and health. I took Lill's advise and we tried to bring humor into our lives as much as possible. I really feel it helped Joel alot who is now in remission. Thank you Lillian. And I would like to reciprocate with a couple funny stories I have. I'll post them separately because I might run out of space. Look for them to come. Congratulations on your successes. Miriam

Chicken Fingers!?!
When Joel and I first moved to the South (Alabama)we saw a restaurant that claimed it was home of the "golden chicken fingers." Neither Joel nor I had ever heard of chicken fingers. We were afraid that being in the South and all, maybe they were talking about the real thing, like frying a chicken's foot and eating it. Yuck. I mean the Southerners do seem to like to eat weird things like pickled eggs that sit in a jar in red liquid on the counter of convenience stores, fried pork rinds, and boiled peanuts. So maybe chicken fingers was another of their weird delicacies. Anyway, Joel and I avoided the restaurant for 2 years but I read an article claiming that this restaurant and their chicken fingers were just the best. I often drove by the restaurant and it was always packed with normal looking, happy, people so we figured let's give it a try. Boy were we ever relieved to find out that what we feared might be the fried toes of chickens actually turned out to be nothing more than chicken nuggets. We have since introduced this restaurant to many in our family and everyone loves going to "Guthries-Home of the Chicken finger" even my "careful what she eats" sister, Lynn will make a special side trip to "Guthries" on her way to Florida from Atlanta to order to enjoy "chicken fingers".

Dear Lillian,
I am thrilled to hear of your progress! Augustin and Wendy are in Argentina and I've been emailing them updates. They send their best. My friend Raini who comes to polo with me, she has the baby, also sends her best wishes. She has really enjoyed her conversations with you. I have a funny story about her. We took the baby for a walk around her neighborhood the other day. When we got back to the house she calmly pointed her car keys at the front door and pushed the unlock button. When nothing happened she did it again, then realized she needed her house key to unlock it! We're praying for you. Keep up the great work.

Lillian, We are so thrilled to hear you are improving and we continue to pray each day for you and your family. If there were a contest for the most replies posted on the message board, you would win for sure. I think the latest count is 176! I think that shows how much you are loved by not only the polo community but from the other extensions of you life! We have checked the message board nearly every day and are so thrilled to hear all the stories, prayers, and just plain love that pours out. Lillian, you are an amazing woman and we will pray for a speedy recovery! Keep up the progress, no matter how big or little! The Galindo Family

Hi Lillian,

I am so happy you are talking and singing too! What wonderful news. Every where I go in the Polo World people are asking me about you and how you are doing. I was just up at California Polo Club shooting photos at the Lan Chile 4 goal Arena Tournament and a number of people were asking me how you were doing and commenting on how happy they were that you are on the road to recovery. The most amazing part is a few of them had never met you, but have been following your progress on the PoloBARN message board. They log on daily to read the posts and to see how you are doing. You have friends you haven't even met yet! I can't wait for you to meet them all. So keep up the great work and all the laughing and smiling. As you said, humor is the best therapy for recovery. --Lynn

A Ski Lodge in Alabama (another funny story)
When my husband, Joel and I moved to Alabama from Wisconsin we knew we would miss one of our favorite activites, downhill snow skiing. As we reached the final leg of our journey driving from Madison to Opelika, we spotted a billboard that said, "Come to Ski Lodge!" I said to Joel, "Do you think...?" And he said in pretty matter of fact tone, "Miriam, have you never heard of a snow machine?!" So we decided to follow the directions indicated on the billboard to guide us to the Ski Lodge. Imagine our surprise and disappointment when it turned out to be nothing more than a Swiss Chalet style apartment complex.
Epilogue: Joel and I now live in Bangor Maine and we can't wait to downhill ski again after an 18 year gap.

Today marks 7 weeks since the accident, & Lillian continues to improve. Yesterday was another great day! She stood up (w/ assistance) for the 1st time! She said it was painful, but after a short rest, she stood up again!!! In another first, she went outside & was able to see & smell the flowers in front of the hospital.

Our Dad, Gene, has been showing Lillian cartoons & reading her the captions. To everyone's delight, she is able to read the captions herself!

And speaking of reading, our Mom, Reva, continues to read all of your kind messages to Lillian. Your words & prayers are so healing...THANK YOU!!!

Another Funny Story for Lillian
When I first moved to a small town in the Heart of Dixie, sometimes it was hard for me to understand the accent. One time, I went to pick up my three year old daughter, Rebecca, from daycare. A little African-American boy, also three years old, came up to me and asked me a question. I had no idea what he was saying, due to his accent and also due to his young age. I asked him to repeat the question. Still, I couldn't figure it out. After I asked him to repeat the question a third time, I figured, "Hey, it's a question. It can only have two answers yes or no. I think I'll just pick one, afterall, I have a 50% chance of getting it right." So I said to the little boy, "Oh, Yes." Well, the little boy looked surprised and horrified. His eyes grew real big to the size of saucers and he said, "Oh, My." Now, I'm even more curious. What was he asking me? As Becca and I left the daycare and walked to our car, I said to Becca, "What did the little boy ask me?" She calmly replied, "He said,'Is Rebecca gonna git a Whoopin'?'"

Today doctors felt Lillian’s breathing was strong enough to remove the oxygen tube leading to her trach valve. While she has been breathing mostly on her own anyhow, this was still another big and welcome step. Her “swallow test” today went well, too, and the doctors said removing the trach altogether is not to far away, perhaps this Friday. When told of this, Lillian lit up. She hates having it on so much and tries to take it out herself when we aren’t looking. Gotta watch that girl like a hawk…

During physical therapy, she actually stood up today, semi-assisted, for almost a full minute! The therapist put her arms around her waist, loosened them for a for few moments and Lillian stood, wobbly, but standing for sure. Later, she sat up in a chair for about 20 minutes, something she said she liked very much.

One thing that is very noticeable now is how much she moves around. Her doctors say this is normal as she regains more and more cognition and movement. She’s very restless now, pulling sheets, hugging the bed railing, searching for the elusive perfect position that brings the most comfort.

Boredom is a big, ugly monster for Lillian now so distractions have been helpful. She asked if she could get physical therapy twice a day instead of just once, an obvious sign she’s got plenty of fight to pull her through the tough road ahead. She loves all the PoloBarn postings, all the great things people have shared…Keep them coming! Even though her attention span is limited, it’s increasing little by little. She asked for TV twice today and we got her a DVD player to watch home movies and favorite shows on demand. If you have any DVD video you want to send we will certainly play it for her! In the meantime, we’re putting together a video of some of her favorite things to keep her mind occupied when family & friends can’t be with her after visiting hours.

The music therapist came today, too. Trina is totally sweet with an angelic voice and nice rhythm on the guitar. She took requests and Lillian sang along, softly and deliberately to Delta Dawn, I Walk The Line and Let It Be. She knew all the words, never missed a beat. It was really something to see.

Lastly, all of you will be happy to know that Lillian’s sense of humor is alive and well! Today we laughed so much, about many things, little inside jokes, double entendres and salty comments of the type that bring a sly grim to her face. When I saw her for the first time in three weeks yesterday, I said, “Lillian you look great!” She replied: “I’m half naked.” She’s been sharp as a tack, missing nothing, her words clearer today than even yesterday . It’s quite amazing.

Lillian,

I have been keeping up with your progress since the accident occured. My family has written encouraging you and I take this time now to say how proud I am of your soon to be full recovery. I never doubted you for a second but must admit, that at times I was frightened nevertheless. I couldn't imagine not having my teamate and more importantly friend keeping my us abreast of the West Coast polo scene. This is just another indication of the power of prayer, family and friends.

They say that the true measure of a persons wealth isn't the number of posessions they have but by the number of people that they count as friends. In that case, Lillian, you are one of the wealthiest people on earth.

My best to you and your family, rest assured you have friends in El Paso and the world over.

More Alabama Jokes
I am from Alabama, something I hear I have in common with Gene! Well, my first trip to Israel was in 1979. I don't know if you were in Israel near that time, but if you were, I'm sure you remember the trouble just getting connected to an overseas telephone operator, much less completing a call. This was among many other common convenience-type differences (that have, thankfully been solved!).

Well, when we went to stay on a kibbutz, they let the tourists lodge in the first buildings ever built, the oldest ones on the kibbutz. We were amazed that real families had ever lived under such conditions and marvelled at the sacrifices they made to get the kibbutz started. Our Israeli guide said of the accomodations, unaware of the presence of a 'Bama gal, "We call this Alabama because it's so poor!"

So glad to hear Lillian is imnproving so rapidly!

Hiya Lillian!

Had lunch with your Dad and Bobby yesterday, and found out about this board...very cool! Otherwise they have done a great job of keeping us in the loop.

M.m.m.m, no matter what other folks might want to know...let me fill you in on what's going on you might be interested in or stuff we were talking about before you checked out for a bit!

First, tell Christopher Robin you have a return trip to catch more fish here...but this time, if he want to eat, he has to help catch AND clean! Hopefully some rain will bring the pond back up. I HAVE been successful in selling two of the horses, my beautiful palomino and the sorrel gelding! Just that cute black and white appy POA left to market.

Hopefully he will be some kid's Christmas present! The only Christmas present I want is a phone call from YOU kiddo!

Stu and your Dad and I are going to the movie tonite...guess what your Dad wanted to see (and of course it was on my list too)? He wants to see Dreamer...believe it or not, a horse story! So we will have fun. Yesterday I saw some of the new properties that are keeping him busy. While I am sending you Tennessee news, please send a Tennessee hug to your Mom from Stu and myself as well.

I guess it's going to be a haul from where you are to where to want to be, but if anyone can kick butt and get there it is you. And hey, remember, you owe me a tour of your part of the country...so get with it!

Took Stu's donkey up to Franklin a couple of week's ago to be part of a movie shoot...okay, public forum so I won't say anything salty about how cute his ... was!

Okay girl, we have some fun on the horizon. I am counting on it!
Remember, you have grit...that is Girl Raised In the South...and you are evidencing it right now. Welcome back!

Funny Story for Lillian-The Fishing Trip
One time when my son, Brock, was around 2 years old, I told him I was going to take him to the grocery store. He ran to his room and got his fishing rod. I explained to Brock that he didn't need his fishing rod because we were just going to the grocery store but he was insistent on bringing it. Rather than argue with a stubborn, non-verbal 2 year old, I decided to let him carry it. When we got to the grocery store, Brock went straight to the back of the store with his fishing rod in hand. I followed him to see what he had in mind. He stopped at the lobster tank and attempted to cast his rod into the tank. Now at 9 years old, Brock continues his love and passion for fishing. And his dad just got elected as the President of the Bangor Bass Fishing Club. So we know where Brock gets his love of fishing from.

Stay positive. Laughter and smiles will get you much farther than any other therapy. See you soon! Lynn

The good news keeps coming…

Lillian’s been a eating a bit more and doing very well in physical therapy. She’s been feisty enough to request sessions twice a day instead of just one and her doctor agreed! By this Wednesday, she should be relocated to an excellent rehab hospital in Encinitas. Her days are long and exhausting but her good humor keeps her buoyant. For instance, in a big meeting with about a dozen hospital nurses, doctors and support staff, someone asked, “Lillian, do you have any questions about what you’ve heard so far?” She replied with a grin: “No, but this guy over here is making eyes at me!” Everyone lost it.

Another time she asked if I had to get home to take care of things and I said, “Lil, you’ve got a whole family supporting you here, it’s our most important job. My mission right now is take make sure you are as comfortable as possible.” She replied: “Well, right now my feet are cold. Can you take care of that??” It was all so cute, sweet, funny and pure Lillian.

Thanks again to everyone. Lillian loves all your good wishes, love and support. And can we all give my mom a great big round of applause? No. A standing ovation! Reva has been with Lillian every single day since September 19th, the day after the accident, making sure she gets the best care possible.

Dearest Lillian,

I am so blessed to hear of your continued progress. I am friends of your parents and they have been keeping me posted on your continued progress. We have had a group of "prayer warriors" interceding on your behalf here in Tennessee. It is a blessing to see the answer to prayers on your behalf. You are a living testimony of the faithfulness of Hashem.

As I was praying for you this morning, I was reminded of Proverbs 18:10; "The name of the L-rd is a tower of strength to which the righteous man runs and is safe." May you be encouraged today as you stand on that promise and continue to increase your strength.

Blessings,

I am so pleased to hear about Lillian's progress. I know that all of you feel blessed as well. I saw Rabbi Posner recently and he talked about his visit with Lillian. I am so glad that someone from Nashville was able to be there with you, especially the Rabbi.

Is Lillian still at Scribbs or has she moved? Can I send her a little something where she is?

What is the name and address of the physical therapy facility where she is staying? I reviewed the messages, but was unable to find specific details.

Today started my "third shift" with Lillian and Grandma Reva. Danny and Bobby have been telling me these wonderful "Lillian Stories" over the phone, and Danny told me that I had to take notes. (He knows how bad my memory is.) Here is my Lillian story for today.
Joanna is a wonderful physical therapist here at Scripps. As you might know, Lillian holds her right arm and hand tightly, and Joanna made a splint to help Lillian keep her fingers open and relaxed. She is supposed to wear it two hours on and two hours off. She doesn't like it much. Now I haven't been here for a little more than two weeks and rules change as rapidly as Lillian changes. She asked me if she could have a drink of water, and not knowing if she could, I left the room to ask Grandma Reva, who was taking a break. On my return, Lillian is looking at me innocently while I notice that her splint has come off. (This device has three velcro straps and did not likely come off on its own.) I asked Lillian, "How did your splint come off?" She answered, "it must have been devine intervention" and began giggling.

Again, Thank you all. Your prayers and good wishes create a safety net in which we hang as if in a hammock.

Hi, Lillian, Bobby, Danny, David, Reva, Gene, and whole clan,
I just now heard about Lillian's accident (and I'm in the news business?) and wanted to let you know I'm thinking about all of you. Lillian, I'm so glad to read about your progress and remembering your feisty energy have no doubts of your recovery. I just read the posts from September 18 on and have been smiling at the different contributions from various Hellers, each reflecting your own wonderful and unique personalities. You're each very special, as I've known from the time I met you as a little girl.
So keep posting. We all want to hear the latest news. And know that a lot of people are praying for every single triumph.

Love,
Hagit

Hi Lillian:

Keep up the good work. We are thinking about you every day.
-Susan & David Weinstein & the kids

Here is a joke that was sent to me via e-mail. We now have your address and will send you a care package soon. No, not the salami yet till you request it. well, here is the joke:
One night, George W. Bush is tossing restlessly
in his White House bed. He awakens to see George
Washington standing by him. Bush asks him,
"George, what's the best thing I can do to help the country?"
"Set an honest and honorable example, just as I
did," Washington advises, and then fades away.

The next night, Bush is astir again, and sees the
ghost of Thomas Jefferson moving through the
darkened bedroom. Bush calls out, "Tom, please!
What is the best thing I can do to help the
country?" "Respect the Constitution, as I did,"
Jefferson advises, and dims from sight.

The third night sleep is still not in the cards
for Bush. He awakens to see the ghost of FDR
hovering over his bed. Bush whispers, "Franklin,
what is the best thing I can do to help the
country?" "Help the less fortunate, just as I did,"
FDR replies and fades into the mist.

Bush isn't sleeping well the fourth night when he
sees another figure moving in the shadows. It is
the ghost of Abraham Lincoln. Bush pleads, "Abe,
what is the best thing I can do right now to help
the country?" Lincoln replies, "Go see a play."

Dear Lillian, We are both very happy to hear about your continuing positive inprovemts. This posting system is really great. For an old man like me, these modern electronics are almost like magic. Lillian is adjusting well to the new staff & schedule in the rehab unit. Her spirits remain very good & she continues to heal.

Lillian could still use some extra special prayers for her right side, & for her swallowing. As soon as her swallowing improves, she will have the feeding tube removed... another big step in her recovery.

Lillian-

Happy Thanksgiving to you and to your family! I thought you might like this story....

I couldn't be home for the holidays, so I drove up to the barn today where the UC Davis horses were to spend some time riding. I walked out into the pasture, and the first horse to walk up to me was KT....so I jumped up on your little black mare and rode her bareback down to the levi and into the water by the orchards that surround the arena and spent time thinking of you and how much we all have to be thankful for. She was perfect, as always, and spent about 20 minutes splashing herself in the water and dunking her nose all the way in until the water passed her nostrils and then snorting it all back out...I came back absolutely drenched, but with one of the biggest smiles I've has in a long time. I only wish I had had a camera with me to take pictures so you can see how beautiful she looks. I promise I will send some ASAP. Just wanted you to know that I was thinking of you today and always...all my love to you, and your family. xoxo

Another Funny Story for Lillian- Does Santa Claus do Hannukah too?

When our first-born daughter Rebecca was three years old, she asked us if Santa Clause just visits Christian children or does he also visit Jewish kids? Given her age, we really didn't know how to respond. Her dad, Joel, heard about a Santa Clause web-site and thought maybe it would be a good idea to just let Rebecca write a letter to Santa explaining her situation. Rebecca liked the idea and told us what she would like to write to Santa, that she was Jewish so she didn't celebrate Christmas but was wondering if he would visit her anyhow during Hannukah. Weeks later, we forgot about the whole incident, and we went shopping. Rebecca saw Santa at the mall and told us she wanted to speak to him. We weren't wild about the idea but she was very insistant and we didn't really see any harm in it. We watched Rebecca as she hopped on Santa's lap but we were out of earshot so we couldn't hear their conversation. We just saw "Santa" ask Rebecca a question and Rebecca give him an answer. After her reply, Santa had the most confused look on his face. He really looked puzzled and at a lose as to how to respond. When Rebecca rejoined us, we asked her what happened. She said, "Santa asked me what I wanted for Christmas and I said, "Didn't you get my e-mail?"

Hi Lillian! I know your like not another note from the Chicago-Weinstein's.....Reva as my phone rang at about 4:20pm Chicago-time I was trying really hard to reach for it in my purse while I was driving carpool but, I didn't pick it up in time. I was very touched by your call. Thank you for thanking me. I hope Lillian you are enjoying the scents that I sent your way...Well Lillian it was a balming high of 19 degrees today. I am not sure why we stay in Chicago I ask myself that question every winter. This winter the cold snap seems to be hitting very early. David is actually in Minneapolis this week so, i would imagine it is cooler there. This morning it was 14 degrees on my car. I am litterally shivering just thinking how cold it is here. we are going to Memphis for Chanukah It will be really nice seeing Joe & Cindy & their kids. We haven't seen them for a while so it will be nice to be together with them and Debby & Ira.

Tomorrow Becky is the Chazan at her school (Schechter) and I get to go and see her! (It's a good thing she mentioned it, since she's been it all this week) Lillian I will say a very special prayer for you and your continued progress, and strength and great work you are doing.

Keep up the great work!

Hi Lillian,

That is excellent news that you are going home. I just got back from Argentina. Colleen Wilson and a few other ladies joined me for a week of polo at El Metejon, an Estancia just South of Buenos Aires. Everyone there seemed to know who you were and were of course asking about you.

Susan White and I wanted to stop by for a visit, but I was not sure if you were up for company yet. So Susan or I will give Eddie a call and see how things are going.

I see Manny on the weekends and I ask about your horses. He says they are doing fine. If you want I can stop by and feed them some carrots for you!

I'm so glad you are on the road to recovery and on your way home. What a great place for you to spend the holidays.

Talk to you soon.

Lillian continues to make progress! I haven't seen her in over four weeks and when I saw her yesterday during her rehab session she was like a new person, much sronger, alert, focused...She is gaining more control over her right side, too, sitting up very easily and for long priods of time. When I saw her, she was at table playing dominos with a few other people, processing all the information very well, knowing what chips to play and when. The highlight of the day was a fifty foot walk down the hall. With a bit of help from the therapist and a walker Lillian held firmly in both hands, she put one foot in front of the other again and again...all the way down the hall. She said she was happy she did it but admited to being tired. "No pain, no gain," she said. She gets in and out of the car pretty easily now, again with help, but less and less. She gets stronger every day. As I remembered from my last visists, she still retains her sharp sense of humor and good spirits, never missing a chance to crack a good joke. Thanks to all of you for your love and support. Happy Holidays to everyone!

Dear Lillian, a few days ago I've met your mother at the store here in Nashville, and she told me about you.
Your mother and father were so kind and attentive to my parents, Clara and Moishe Bukengolts, immigrants from Minsk, Russia; I am forever grateful to Reva and Gene for their
attention and care toward my parents. I always respected and admired them; and now since I've learned about your story - I want to join so many of your friends to wish you the speediest recovery and be a 100% of who you wish to be!
And I have a story, too; once I was offered a job that I thought was too high level for me; I talked to Gene; and when your father asked me a few q-ns he said: 'when you take a risk - you need to do your best'. I did, and it worked - still working!
You have wonderful parents, family, friends - so many are cheering for you! Good luck! Raisa Oyvetsky.

I feel badly that I haven't written in a while. I have though been thinking a lot about you. Keep up the good work! It is so hard when peol etell you what to do but, we are all so proud of you and your inner strength is amazing keep it going. It was so funny a few miutes ago Adam had a friend come over after school he has been here for about 3 hours and he said "Becky what are you doing here" Becky said, "Adam and I are twins" he said, "Oh I didn't know that". It was really funny because we just assumed everyone knew they were twins. Adam & Becky will be turning 8 in March. I have been teaching preschool at a jewish preschool this year I teach 2 and 3 year olds. They are so cute. Yesterday there were 7 two year olds that I had engrossed in a puppet show it was very interesting. my 3year old kids are doing a unit on Israel this unit is about 6 weeks long 2 more weeks to go and then they take a pretend trip to Israel. This preschoolo I hear you are ready for that Salami! I just need your address and we will send that Romanian's Salami to you and your family I will get the address from Debby & Ira.

We have just returned from our first visit with Lillian since mid-December. She looks well,
goes to rehab reluctantly and participates inconsistently. At home she prefers the wheelchair to the walker to the cane to walking. She fears falling, though she is belted and an aide is beside her. Answers to go outside are mostly negative, ambiguous-"I'll see".
Lillian has taken two trips each to the sea and the barn, just not during our visit. We understand the current situation is part of the healing and we are grateful for past miracles.
Again, many thanks for your good wishes and prayers.
