July 30, 04: It May Be Small But . . . - Sierra Pampa Polo Club may be very small, but they are the GIANTS in the eyes of the USA Squad going to France to represent this country in the World Cup Finals.  The folks at Cierra Pampa have helped more than all others together as JP Therioit stepped up to the golden horseshoe on Thursday.  Yesterday, Tim Gannon, head of Outback Polo, out did them all as he bought 50 tickets for the team.  Now that’s a big help.  All polo people who know Outback Steak House please stop by and have a very rewarding dinner and say thanks. We are getting lots of help from the North.  How about the South and East?  Help your area support the Team.  Polo is a real deal as you know.

Thanks Tim Gannon & JP Theroit.  May your horses run fast and your sticks be true to goal.   See ya and thanks from West Coast Polo and the USA Team!

July 29, 04: It was like the Democrats said las night . . .Hope is on its way. That I doubt, but it was a big help from J.P. Theriot who came trhough as a Gold Sponsor today by buying 5 polo pony raffle tickets. J.P. is Head Cheese at a very special place up in Petaluma, Ca., just North of San Francisco. They have a great club and the wildest, funniest Polo Club on the Planet called Cierra Pampa. Stop by an dsee them. You know its fun when Tim Gannon (Outback Steak House & Polo Patron) makes it a summer home. Thanks J.P.! From the USA POLO TEAM.

July 29, 04: Time To Shine - Yes it’s that time of the year. Two games to go before the big one and it will be showdown at 2:00 PM and 4:00 PM on Friday. The semis for the America Cup get going.  For earlier action it will be the semis of the Santa Barbara’s Cup at 10.30 AM.  Piocho takes on the Antelope and Grant’s Farm takes on 2003 PCO champs at Meeker’s field at the same time 10.30 on Friday.  Have a little lunch at Tinkers and get ready for the PM action.

Here is the way it was today in the quarters of the Santa Barbara Cup.  It was a good game as they had to play at Meeker’s field and it was a Mig attack as young gun Miguelito Torres caught fire.  If the big guns fired, Miguelito did the damage as they rolled through Tuscany Oaks on a mission with a Mig attack.  Either Dangerous Bob (Fell) was tired or did not want to make the drive on Friday as he did not run over anyone today on or off the field which is sort of questionable when losing. There are 2 teams who have never been here before in the semis. So you know they came from everywhere to play. Gillian Johnston leads a hard-hitting and flying Bendabout towards the finals. By the way Gillian is the first woman to sponsor and win the U.S. OPEN just 2 years ago.  They look forward to playing her brother Skeeter, who just happens to be captain and patron of Everglades.  First they have to get by the other two Astradas playing with another new team Las Monjitas.  So it will be four brothers and only 2 will go to the finals. Skeeter Johnston and the Everglades  take on Piocho Ranch and the Mighty Memo Gracida with young gun Julio Gracida leading that attack at a high rate of speed. Even though they would like a family reunion there are some problems getting there as both face strong opposition Friday. So be there and see it before your own eyes.

 See ya at POLO.

July 26th, ’04: Young Guns Not The Top Guns - The Young Guns did not shine today as the Old-Big Guns were just that, big guns. It started early and stayed the same throughout the day. In the opening games on Sunday it was Grant’s Farm and Everglades, who did have the only real young player on their team in the form of Parker Flannery.  Parker is improving every game and at a very high rate of speed.  He maybe a young gun very soon as he was very helpful to the big sticks Owen Rhinehart and Mike Azzaro running free to goal on several situations.  On Sunday he was doing his job and has a real drive to get back and help.  The Everglades were too much for the Farm boys (Grant’s Farm) on Sunday and galloped away in the last chukker by 4 to win 12 – 8.

Then it was the new team Las Mojitas (Camilio Bautista, Ignacio Novillo Astrada, Eduardo Novillo Astrada, Pelon Escapite making their first appearance on the Santa Barbara greens.  They got way behind, but not out as they kept coming back on Duende.  In the 6th, Las Mojitas finished their trip to the top as they came to the final bell up by one. Their colors are bright Orange and their future may be as bright. Las Mojitas has 2 very good brothers,  the Astrada’s, playing for them and they also have Mr. Bautista who likes to win and newcomer Mexico Captain Pelon Escapite. They are all playing well and it was Pelon beating his brother another young gun from Mexico named Ulysses, who is the number 1 for Duende.  In the 1 O’clock it was Antelope taking on another tough team called Bendabout.  Bendabout also has a set of Astrada brothers Miguel and Javier playing behind the fastest woman in town Gillian Johnston.  In a game that was close most of the time, it was the Bendabout crew finishing the day up by 3 and they head to a showdown with Isla Carroll, who were the winners in OT against Piocho Ranch.  Piocho who has the one young gun who did shine Sunday, Julio Gracida.  Julio G. made it a very tough game all the way to the end and just missed being the hero of the day when he missed a difficult shot as the clock ran down.  It was Chris Nevins and Isla Carroll patron John Goodman giving the big sticks all kinds of help and it was a big team win to put them in the semis against the boys & girl from Bendabout. The weather was great the teams were good.  It was a fairly injury-free day.

Were still looking for help on the raffle sales for the USA World Cup Polo Team.

Come up Friday and see the action.  There will be 4 games as the consolation round will be played at Piocho fields where you can really let the ponies run. We will post times later .

Semi finals Teams:

Everglades  vs. Las Mojitas
Bendabout  vs. Isla Carroll

See ya at the SBPC

July 23rd, ’04: Reverse It Is - Today in SB it was a reverse of Sunday in many ways and not in other cases.  Tuscany Oaks, who drew Grant’s Farm in the first round of the Americas Cup, were playing each other for the second time in four days. Well it started out bad for Grant’s Farm as they gave up 4 goals before they touched the goal line, but things started to happen in the 3rd.  Grant’s Farm made a big run, but an even bigger run by the Cabazon (Mariano Gonzalez) similar to his big run Sunday kept Tuscan Oaks from being shut out.  In the 3rd with a big run and only seconds on the clock they again scored to end the chukker. Luckily this time it was to end the first 1/2. In the 4th it was Grant’s Farm coming on strong at the finish and winning the 5th.  Then with a 3 goal lead in the 6th it was Tuscany Oaks coming right back with the flying Galindo (Hector) on the run and Brad Blake doing a good job. They came roaring back and it looked like Grant’s Farm might be in trouble when Josey (Joseph Stuart) fluffed an easy one, but Tuscany Oaks was not getting the KO this time.  It was a farmers kind of day.  The score was exactly the same, but the names by them were switched at 11 – 10.  Grant’s Farm goes on to play Everglades and their big sticks are 10-goal Mike Azzaro and former 10-goal Owen Rhinehart. So you should be there.  It will be 4 games of 20-goal polo and only the winners play again, so you know there is no lagging.

 2 games at 10 am

1 at 1pm
1 at 3pm

Be there!

July 22, '04: We are getting some support, but we need a lot more.  Team USA has some very big supporters who are already on board  . . .

Leather  CPR - Darren Zuzow is the first Gold Sponsor (5 tickets)
Ambassador Glen & Gloria Holden  (2)
Norma Owen (2)
Mike Hakan
Mike Azzaro
Matt Richardson
Woody Stuart
Lisa Bosstick
Tony Gregg
Denny Geiler
Ed Masterson
and many others

You can be next ( I hope so!)

Help us if you can.  The U.S. team has a great chance this time.  We lost to the champions (Brazil) during the last World Cup because we had no subs on the team as we could not afford them.  Team USA had 2 injured players who played anyway and it was a sad loss for a polo country.  So help us if you can and will we will be glad to help you somehow.

Do not forget you could win a horse with complete tack or a 5,000 check if you do not want the horse.

See ya at the World Cup.  Be a sponsor today! Buy a ticket for the raffle for the USA World Cup Team right here on PoloBarn.com.

July 21, ’04: On The Southern Front - Where the surf meets the turf it was a barn burner as the Gypsy/Hurricanes out lasted the Voyager.  Gypsy got out early on the Surfer (Diego Cossio) and Mr. Bray's action. It was the two Patrons pulling big weight as they were able to get the big sticks free as Ms. Figi and Shoot ‘em up Sean Macleod, who has a very steady string, both like to run. It was an action packed game with the Gypsy getting out to a big lead and then the fireballs of Silent Chris Maloney’s team began to fire. Mr. Fast-etta (Mariano Fassetta) came out smoking and put it in od with Mighty Mike Matz and young Tavo Bermudas letting them fly as they got close, but just could not finish the song. It was Sean & Suzanne standing on the victory walk in the final tournament for San Diego. For 2 weeks it is break time and it will be the human wave of surf soccer for two weeks before the return of the horsemen.   SD will resume around Aug. 4, so do not miss polo. They are playing in Santa Barbara, Calif. Polo Club, Petaluma, Gilroy and Menlo.  If your looking to see a really pretty Polo Club drive up to Calgary, Alberta Canada and see the Rockies. They are 20-goal.  On the way buy a ticket for the raffle for the USA World Cup Team right here on PoloBarn.com.

See ya soon somewhere they play POLO.

July 19th, '04: IT WAS TUSCANY OAKS - on the northern front of the Gold Coast as they got by the Grant’s Farm team in the last few seconds after Tuscany lead all day.  It was the Farm boys taking the lead with 4 minutes in the sixth.  They had a chance to go up by 2, but it did not happen.  Mr. Mariano Gonzalez tied it up with a booming # 3 penalty shot with 44 seconds left.  It was Grant’s Farm with a # 5 and looking to the ocean goal, but it was deflected by Hector Galindo.  It was then turned by Brad Blake and picked up by   Gonzalez and away he went down the boards in front of the stands and with 12 seconds left made a brilliant cut shot through the goal. It was a very nice day for polo about 75 F and a breeze. The fields were rough, but the games were fast just the same.  It was Piocho Ranch with young gun Julio Gracida getting the best of the Antelope in the consolation round.  The finals found both # 1’s playing very well. Josey (Joseph Stuart) had a great day.  He just needed more shots as he sank 3 great goals, 2 in the run to catch Tuscany Oaks and take the lead.  Dangerous Bob Fell did not run over anyone, but scored 2 very good goals and made a nearside back shot which I did not even dream he could make.  His shot cleared a golden opportunity for Grant’s Farm to go up by 2.  Any way you look at it the Tuscany Oaks team is the 2004 Skene Cup champs. Guess which two teams start the America’s Cup?

As you might have guessed the Tuscany Oaks drew Grant’s Farm in the first game on Friday at 3 p.m. The USPA AMERICAS CUP is like this . . . 1 game on Friday and 4 on Sunday. It is single elimination.

Friday 3 p.m  Grant’s Farm vs. Tuscany Oaks

Sunday July 25 th

10 a.m.    Everglades plays Friday winner

10a.m.     Duende     plays  Los Monitas

1 p.m.    Bendabout  plays  Antelope

3 p.m.    Isla carroll plays Piocho Ranch

Some changes in the teams in the 20-goal . . .

Piocho Ranch --- Pablo McDonough for Hugo Barabucchi
Bendabout --- Javier Astrada for Boone Stribling

New team and a good one  . . .

Las Mojitas
Camilio Bautista
Ignacio Novillo Astrada
Eduardo Novillo Astrada
Pelon Escapite

Most of the changes are players who were playing in the British Gold Cup in which young Javier Astrada was on the winning team there. He now goes to the team of Bendabout with his 10-goal brother Miguel.

We are still selling tickets for the raffle to support the USA World Cup team and would love your help. Please sign up on this Web site at the following page. http://www.polobarn.com/teamusafundraiser/fundraiser1.html Help us if you can.  – Coach Crowder

 See ya.

July 16th, ’04: Sunday Is Coming. Are you? In the North or the South it’s finals time in Southern California and the Gold Coast will be providing silver come Sunday afternoon. Down South its Gypsyland with the Kiwi (Graham Bray)  and the Surfer (Diego Cossio) taking on Silent Chris  Maloney (Voyager) and the Fast-Etta (Mariano Fassetta) and it will be speed time.  Voyager will start rolling at 2 p.m. They slid by Emilio Sacal (Curt Hughes Dodge) to reach the finals where the Gypsy's were already waiting by their win on Friday.  So be there. It’s the last big one before the break (July 19 – Aug. 4th in San Diego – polo break) and the race horses get to town.

In the Surf Polo Cup finals it will be . . .

Gypsy

Sean Mcleoud
Graham Bray
Diego Cossio
Susan Figi

Voyager

Chris Maloney
Mike Matz

Mariano Fassetta

Tavioto Bermudez

Up North in Santa Barbara they had to win by 4 and guess what?  They won by 5.  Yes the Oaks from Tuscany got to growing and they over shadowed a very hot Antelope team and are headed to the finals. it was a close game for a while as Hector Galindo and Mariano Gonzalez would be set up by Brad Blake.   They went up by 2 then came Mr. Snow . . .  wack, wack and tied it up again. In the 5th the penalties were converted by Mariano Gonzalez and not by  the Antelopes.  It just got farther and farther apart and it ended with Tuscany Oak by 5 over Antelope. Tuscany heads to their first Skene finals and their they will meet an old teammate who was with them before.  As Hector Galindo and Andy Busch have played in the finals 4 out of the last 5 years.  I think either with or against each other and Mariano Gonzalez has been there 2 out of the last 4 or more Skene Tournaments.  So the only new blood in the finals is Bob Fell of Tuscany, Brad Blake and the young gun from Grant’s Farm Josey (Joseph Stuart). It should be fun in the sun on Sunday afternoon. In other action on Friday it was Mr. Hakan and Mr. Goodman finishing off a tie 1 on 1.   Mike Hakan gets the win. It was Everglades getting by Grant’s Farm in a game that did not mean much.  At 3 p.m it was Piocho Ranch taking out Bendabout so there will be plenty of fireworks on Sunday with it all starting at 1 p.m.

In the consolation finals

Piocho Ranch

Henry Walker
Julio Gracida
Memo Gracida
Hugo Barabucci

Antelope

Miguel Torres, Jr.
Adam Snow
Luis Escobar
Geoff Palmer

In the Robert Skene cup finals . . .

Grants Farm

Joe Stuart
Jeff Blake
Julio Arellano
Andy Busch

Tuscany Oaks

Brad Blake
Hector Galindo
Mariano Gonzalez
Bob Fell

So if you want to be having a good time on Sunday come buy some raffle tickets to win a horse, new saddle and bridle and support the USA Polo Team on their trip to the World Cup finals in France.  Become a team sponsor.  Have a very good time where the Surf meets the Turf in Del Mar at the San Diego Polo Club or in the place where the Hills touch the beach in Carpinteria at the Santa Barbara Polo Club.  You will have a very GOOD TIME.

July 15, ’04: They Are Waiting – Grant’s Farm and The Gypsy"s have something in common. On Friday they have a game, but its just a game down South in Del Mar.  There are still several with a chance from No No Norma of Owen Polo, Voyager or Curt Hughes Dodge.  If Voyager wins its not important for anyone else because they will meet the Gypsy's on Sunday at 2 p.m.

In Santa Barbara if Antelope wins its all over.  If they do not and Isla Carroll wins, look out its audit time.  Geoff Palmer is going to have a tough day.  He arrives from France at about 9 tonight and plays about 10 am Friday. No time for Jet Lag Geoff.   Well its good it came down to this as 2 home teams Tuscany Oaks with Dangerous Bob Fell  and Geoff Palmer with little sleep can make it happen. They need to put a lead shank on Bob Fell as he nearly killed Hugo Barabucci last month in a bad wreck.  Reports are Joel Baker was diving for health reasons on Sunday trying to avoid a Porsche Rash when you put men in control there is a power surge sometimes so beware. it all gets worked out on Friday. Who's in? Who's out? Stay tuned for the final show.

WE ARE LOOKING FOR HELP ON THE WORLD CUP TEAM. BUY A RAFFLE TICKET AND WIN A HORSE WITH ALL NEW TACK OR 5 GRAND IN CASH IF YOU DO NOT WANT A HORSE FOR THE COURSE. TURN UP THE HEAT, BUY A TICKET and SEE A VERY GOOD GAME ON FRIDAY. JOIN THE FUN AT THE POLO FIELD NEAR YOU.

See ya at the green side.

July 10, '04: It's Poppin' On The West Coast - Things are hopping out West as in firepower up North at Petaluma and sheer power in Santa Barbara (S.B.) and war on the Southern front of San Diego. It was early in S.B. but Grant’s Farm was ready and they slid by the boys of Piocho by a hair going up by 2 and hanging on to win by 1. Jeff Black took a wild ride in the 6th chukker with a fall a rollover and a hang-up, but just like timex he just kept ticking and still is. Also at 10:30 it was Boones Farm no its Bendabout after too much Boones Farm keeping it ahead of the Everglades. Bendabout won by 2 in the last chukker to put them away. At 1:00 PM it was Tuscany Oaks and the big boys Hector Galindo and Mariano Gonzalez running all over the defending PCO Open champs from ‘03 (Duende) and finishing up by 2. At 3:00 PM it was an old fashioned a** whipping as Antelope, with 2 very good rookies,  Miguelito Torres and Marcos Bignoli, Jr. gave the big sticks all the support they needed and kicked down the field and won by more than 5 at the final bell.

Down South at San Diego Polo Club it was the little Lady Lisa Bosstick making a big wave as she and the Surfer Doc (Scott Dlusgos) could not make it by the boys from Gypsy Land.  It was a

bad day for the surgeon (Gaston Von Wernich) as its always been a problem to work on those Kiwis (Graham Bray) and in the late game it was a overtime battle.  Skinny, but fat-head George Daou came out the goat and the hero as he scored the tying goal for the other team. He was also a hero and scored the final winning goal for his own team.  I wonder which one he will remember tonight? It was a bad day for Emilio Sacal to take off as they slid by and he could not even be there.  That’s a family way of life and that’s polo. So see it somewhere. Sunday there is plenty of it no matter where you live.

See ya

July 5th, ’04:  Fireworks - There were lots of them in America on Sunday night and there were plenty in the city where the surf meets the turf Sunday all day. It was the 10-goal action that was popping as Silent Chris Maloney and company got rolling to a 2 & o start as they slid by Lady Lisa Bosstick and Surfer Doc (Scott Dlugos) on Friday.  Voyager 1 upped The Bridges or Norma's team on Sunday with a Mom and son contest as Josey (Joseph Stuart) played for Silent Chris while Mighty Mike Matz took a break for a hang nail (broken thumb) and Mom (Dina Stuart) took Norma Owen’s place and easily outplayed their high-ended 1-goaler, but it still was not enough to get by Fast-Eta. Mariano Fassetta sank 9 in his own fireworks display. They drop to 0 & 2 for the weekend. It was a bit of a surprise on Sunday in the featured game as a new team with a new heart in the form of Curt Hughes and new Patron on the block, a hard riding Emilio Socal.  Curt Hughes Dodge snuck up on the Surfer (Diego Cossio) and  Mr. Bray with Augi Dawgy (Agustin Zavaleta) putting on a show with his taco and then losing his hair on a dare that if he beat these boys he would clip it and he did, all of it! So it is going to be a big weekend down South as

last weeks champs are 0 &1 and need to rally big this week to get back to the silver round.  Silent Chris needs 1 more to guarantee a place in the trophy round if Mike can make it.  The fields are playing great down that way as Little Joe (Strickland) seems to have it on line to be the best in Southern California at this time. The teams still all have a chance to make the medal round. In the 4-goal it was Wild Woman Ellen Greenhill (last tournament Champ) hanging on for another run against Bernie Diaz & Roberto Estudillo. Santa Barbara  gets underway this Friday with 8 teams going for the Robert Skene trophy and a whole bunch of new faces in town, so stay tuned for the line-ups.

See ya anywhere they play polo.

July 4th, ’04: All week we have heard from various people that they have been seeing a lot of horse trailers headed West. Well there headed to California from San Diego to Santa Rosa where there is polo going on. S.B. is closed till the 9th of July, but all others are in attack mode. There were some big weekends as Petaluma is enjoying a big rise in polo players as well as many of the newer clubs.  There is a new arena location down South in Murrieta which is hopping called “Buffalo Ranch.”  Playa Grande in El Toro just got bigger I hear, so all in all get out your ponies and head to polo. We have teams and players from New York to West Palm Beach pulling into The West Coast Polo Region from Glen Straub in Calgary,  Tim Gannon in CERRA PAMPA, Adam Snow in S.B and one man from Mexico City is pulling into Petaluma.  We have action on all Western fronts from 20-goal to the amateurs and its all polo, so be there.

See ya
