Fish Creek pulls ahead in 12-goal

By DIANE HENSLEY

INDIO Fish Creek defeated Anaconda Sunday 10-8 , hanging on to their No. 1 slot in the 12-goal league with an all-out defensive push that retired patron Fred Mannix to the sidelines in the second half and held Anaconda to just three goals from the field.

Frederick Mannix Jr., handily put four goals on the board for the team while teammate Artie Cameron Jr. struggled for his three goals, enduring two tumbles that did little but spur him on to compete harder.
Anaconda spent its defensive energy deterring seven-goaler Julio Zavaleta in an effort that allowed just two goals in the match for the pro known for his aggressive positioning and skillful ball handling.

Cameron Jr. held opponent Eric Dix scoreless in the sixth-chukker tiebreaker, driving through the go-ahead goal three minutes into the chukker capped by a long bomb sent through the posts by teammate Dawson Ludwig with 1:05 left to play.

Cameron, 19, pressed hard early in the final chukker, riding off Anaconda's Gaston Von Wernich neck to neck just inches apart and speeding toward goal when his reins locked with Von Wernich's. Cameron went off his horse trying to free the reins. Minutes later, unhurt and unshaken, he picked up a ball left behind by Zavaleta, hooked out of the play by Anaconda's Federico Von Wernich, and struck it with the offside winner 35 yards out.

Cameron was forced from his horse twice in the match, earlier when his horse slipped on the grass as he tried to break away from the path of an advancing pack. The part-time Indio resident and student at Santa Barbara City College chalked the win up to the defensive strategy of "getting the man" and the hunger to win.
