Jackson Hole
by a goal
BY DIANE HENSLEY
INDIO -- Rancho Carinoso's
quarterback Jose Soto scored all six team goals Sunday in the
season opening RoadRunner tournament at Eldorado Polo Club, but
they weren't enough to beat Jackson Hole Horse Emporium. Jackson
Hole's defensive strategy and field coverage kept Rancho at a
one- to two-goal deficit the entire match before the 7-6 defeat.
Jackson Hole worked a successful
passing game, tying up Rancho's forwards as George Gilstrap and
Roberto Ortiz worked the ball downfield. Lolo Payan was able
to shake his man and move the ball.
"We all played together
well, and it's great fun to play out here with good
friends and to have good luck, too," Gilstrap said.
Team skills were evenly matched,
but in a three-goal tournament, it can work to a team's advantage
to use two higher-rated players in the handicap mix, coaching
league manager Vicky Owens said.
"We really tried to control
the throw-ins," patron Artie Cameron said after
the match, "but the game didn't go as we wanted it to."
Soto said the team played well,
and simply lost. But the defeat, for him, was
softened as his brother Melecio, also a polo pro, walked to the
end line to
meet him and congratulate him on a game well played. Melecio,
recovering from
severe head trauma sustained in competition 10 months ago, has
been working on regaining mobility and his livelihood with the
help of his friends, family and Empire and Eldorado Polo Clubs,
who have kept close vigil on his progress.
