The 2001 6 goal Dean Mullins Trophy was played in beautiful weather
on field 10 on 15 April, competed for over two days by five teams.
Check out our Trophy Final match report for our take on Emerald
Bay's win over Long Beach.
Trophy Final Match Report
The Dean Mullins Trophy
winning team was Emerald Bay, led by Joel Baker in the
number 3 spot, with Ron Singer at 1, Jake Jacobson at 2 and Artie
Cameron, Jr. at back.
The guys in blue faced stiff competition in the final from Long
Beach, comprised of Ken and Dan Walker at 1 and 3, with Marshall
Allen at 2 and Dr Toby Mayer at 4.
At one goal each after the first chukker, two penalties from
Joel Baker and one from the club president, Jake Jacobson
against two goals from Long Beach saw Emerald Bay ahead by one
goal going into the third chukker. A very good third chukker
for Long Beach with a penalty and two field goals from Dan
Walker saw the white team lead into the second half with
the half-time scoreboard at 6-4.
The fourth chukker was the match-decider, with five goals added
to Emerald Bay's 4, against none for Long Beach which had its
opportunities but some bad luck and did not make the goals. Ron
Singer had a great chukker, making two goals from the front
(nearly a repeat performance of his third-chukker three goal
triumph of the day before). Joel Baker added one, and
Artie Cameron Jr another two penalty goals to leave the
blue team leading 9-6 going into the fifth period.
The Long Beach team came back with a penalty and a field goal
from Dan Walker in the last two chukkers, against one
field goal and two penalties off Joel Baker's mallet.
Thus Emerald Bay held and consolidated its fourth chukker lead
to take the match 12-8.
A good time was had by all, and the club and players thank the
umpires Joel Ladin and Matt Walker, and the third
man David Flynn, all of whom did a great job keeping the
start-of-season competitive enthusiasm of the players well under
control.
Each of the three teams in
the consolation league played three chukkers each against the
other two teams with Immi Pictures coming out the victors.
Doreen Ladin came out and played a great game for Nicoma
on Sunday despite having broken her toe on Saturday, and we understand
Hector Monserrat and Sebastian Tkacik are both
somewhat tender after T-boning each other in spectacular fashion
whilst playing on the same team!
The trophy presentation was held in lovely late afternoon sunlight
in the clubhouse, and many of the players and spectators stayed
for some end of tournament conviviality, joining with tail-ender
guests from the extremely successful Sunday brunch of earlier
in the day. The clubhouse and the grounds are in great order
and a credit to those who have spent so much time and effort
preparing them for the season, especially Bill Triller
and his crew.
