MATCH DESCRIPTION:
Five teams started the tournament and each team played one full match against the other teams. The tournament took several surprising turns as each time the finalist seem to be figured out, a new leader would emerge. Mokarow farms only needed to win the game against Intergame to go to the finals. Mokarow was favored but Intergame played terrific and sent Mokarow home with a defeat and lost their bid for the finals. This put CMC/Hibernia and Henry S. Miller head to head again with a long history of competition. Henry S. Miller has enjoyed victories over CMC/Hibernia in two overtime finals last fall. CMC/Hibernia narrowly defeated Henry S. Miller in the matches leading up to the finals.
The Hibernia Championship Field at Las Colinas Polo Club was the scene for the battle for the title in the USPA Western Regional Championship 12-goal, on June 6. Henry S. Miller fought hard with CMC/Hibernia (for the third time in three years) for the silver and the bragging rights. Regardless of Henry S. Miller’s enthusiasm and talent, CMC/Hibernia once again emerged triumphant with a score of 12-6.
Hibernia jumped out of the gates at the beginning of the first chukker and never let up. Will Tankard, Brent Mirikitani, Billy Mudra, and Jesse Pruitt pushed hard from the first throw-in to the last line-up. Starting the game with one goal on handicap, CMC/Hibernia finished the first chukker with a score of four to one after one goal from the field from Tankard and two from the field from Mudra. Mudra’s two goals helped his first chukker horse, Sidney, walk away with the Best Playing Pony Blanket.
Mudra’s teamwork with Mirikatani made for a strong force in the middle and Tankard and Pruitt balanced the field precisely at the front door and the back door. Oscar Bermudez for Henry S. Miller, along with Vaughn Miller, Isidro Olivas, and Stacey Stover, had to push hard to keep up with CMC/Hibernia. Bermudez scored on a penalty 3 for Henry S. Miller late in the chukker.
Mirikitani slammed in two penalty 3's for CMC/Hibernia in the second chukker and Mudra scored another from the field. Bermudez scored one from the field for Henry S. Miller bringing the score to seven to two at the end of the second chucker.
The third and fourth chukkers were even with Henry S. Miller scoring two points on penalties in the third by Olivas and one from the field in the fourth chucker by Stover and CMC/Hibernia scoring one from the field in the third chucker by Tankard, one on a penalty in the third chucker by Mudra and one on a penalty in the fourth chucker by Mudra. Henry S. Miller held Hibernia in the fifth as Bermudez scored the only point in the chucker on a penalty.
The sixth chucker began with the score ten to six in favor of CMC/Hibernia. CMC/Hibernia quickly pushed ahead to seal the game with a score from the field from Tankard and another from Mudra.
Mudra and Mirikitani shared the Most Valuable Player award provided by Lombardo Custom Apparel and Mudra’s first chucker horse, Sidney, was awarded the Best Playing Pony.
