The Prince of Waless Charitable Foundation Polo Day supported by Audi UK was held at Cowdray Park on Saturday 29th May. The Foundation, which is a registered charity, was established in 1979 and distributes funds each year to benefit a wide range of causes throughout the world. Last year, this event raised over £30,000. This year His Royal Highnesss chosen charities were Breakthrough Breast Cancer and FARA Orphans in Romania.
The main event of the day was an exhibition match between two hand picked teams representing Highgrove and Audi. The team for Highgrove playing in red was Kevin Mokarow (1-goal), Vaughn Miller (1-goal), the legendary Mexican player and ten times winner of the Gold Cup for the British Open Carlos Gracida (9-goal) and at the back HRH the Prince of Wales (2-goal). The Audi team playing in black were Claus Vatter (0-goal), Will Johnston (0-goal) Gabriel Donoso (8-goal) and at the back Jack Kidd (4-goal).
The match was fast and exciting and in the first chukka the Mexican Maestro, Carlos Gracida scored the first goal followed very shortly by a second goal from Keven Mokarow which put Highgrove in the lead by the end of the first chukka. The second chukka was dominated by Audi with Claus Vatter scoring twice and Gabriel Donoso, the Chilean Charmer playing extremely well. The third chukka saw a fantastic goal by Jack Kidd and at the end of this chukka Audi were in the lead. At the start of the fourth chukka Kevin Mokarow had a great chance to reduce the Audi lead but missed the ball just by the goal and with time running out Carlos Gracida, under pressure, took a penalty shot for Highgrove but unfortunately the ball went wide! So the match was won by Audi. As the match was handicapped the final score was Audi 5 Highgrove 4 1/2.
The presentation was made by Lord Cowdray and the best playing polo prize went to Carlos Gracidas pony, Marcello.
