Final Results: Henry S. Miller def. Tiburon 5 - 4

MATCH DESCRIPTION: Henry S. Miller won the right to represent Las Colinas Polo Club against the Houston Governor Cup champion for the state championship.  Henry S. Miller emerged victorious in the May 6-goal Wednesday league and Tiburon won the 6-goal Saturday league setting up a match for the winner to compete against the Houston champion.  Both lined up with 5-goal teams to start the match on the flat.  The match started with each team competing hard for each shot and Isidro Olivas finally broke free to score the lone goal of the first chukker.  Olivas started off the second chukker with a quick goal to give Henry S. Miller a two goal lead but late in the second chukker Gene Evans put one through for Tiburon leaving the match 2-1 at the halfway point.  Chukker three belonged to Henry S. Miller as Vaughn Miller started things with a penalty two conversion followed by one from the field and Steve Krueger gave them a four goal lead late in the third making it 5-1 with one chukker to play.  Tiburon started the fourth with intentions of making a run as Robert Payne converted an early penalty three to cut the deficit, then his son Rob Payne III scored the next two to cut the difference to one goal.  As the final minutes ticked off, each team shot at the goal twice but with no score sending Henry S. Miller to victory.

Henry S. Miller def. Buffalo/Ivanhoe 9 - 7

MATCH DESCRIPTION: Henry S. Miller and Buffalo/Ivanhoe squared off in the 6-goal Bombardier Skyjet Cup finals.  Henry S. Miller was the champion of the previous 6-goal and headed to the finals of the Bombardier Skyjet Cup undefeated.  Their opponent Buffalo/Ivanhoe, had only one loss and it was to Henry S. Miller, so revenge was on their minds.  Buffalo/Ivanhoe struck first on a penalty two by Susan Berkaert, but Steve Krueger gave a quick response for the Henry S. Miller team, leaving the match tied after one chukker.   In the second chukker, Isidro Olivas scored one from the field and nailed a penalty four for Henry S. Miller while Susan Berkaert converted her second penalty two for Buffalo/Ivanhoe making Henry S. Miller the lead 3-2 at halftime.  The pace increased in chukker three as Billy Mudra scored twice for Buffalo/Ivanhoe but Henry S. Miller answered with two goals from the field from Vaughn Miller and Steve Krueger.   Isidro Olivas followed with a converted penalty three to make it 6-4 Henry S. Miller after chukker three.  The fourth chukker found Henry S. Miller extending the lead with a quick score from Isidro Olivas, then Mudra converted a penalty four to bring Buffalo/Ivanhoe back within two goals but not for long as Olivas scored his second goal of the chukker.  This time Mudra answered again from the field making his third goal of the chukker and sixth in the match.  A last goal from Will Tankard could not make the difference as Henry S. Miller won 9-7.

MATCH DESCRIPTION: The 12-goal Independence Cup took place on July 4, 2004 at the Las Colinas Polo Club on Hibernia Championship Field.  Henry S. Miller faced Mokarow Farms in the finals match.  Henry S. Miller began with two goals on handicap and Isidro Olivas scored two goals to give Henry S. Miller a 4-0 lead.  Late in the first chukker, Gene Evans scored a goal to get Mokarow Farms on the board making it 4-1 at the end of the first chukker.  The two teams exchanged penalty goals in the second chukker as Henry S. Miller maintained a 5-2 lead. Olivas scored early in the third chukker giving Henry S. Miller a second four goal advantage.  Quickly, Mokarow Farms started a rally with goals from Evans and Robert Payne to cut the deficit 6-4 in favor of Henry S. Miller at halftime.  Mokarow Farms almost came back after a penalty conversion from Payne to make the score 6-5.  Henry S. Miller responded with goals from Olivas, Vaughn Miller, and Oscar Bermudez to extinguish the Mokarow rally and give Henry S. Miller another four goal lead after four chukkers making it 9-5.  Payne got Mokarow back on the board within two, as well as, tied up a sixty foot penalty but Olivas intercepted the shot and took it coast-to-coast for a goal once again breaking Mokarow’s momentum.  Vaughn Miller added one more putting Henry S. Miller in the lead 11-7 after five chukkers.  The sixth and final chukker saw Payne score his sixth goal of the match but Olivas had the answer with his seventh goal of the match making Henry S. Miller the champion of the 12-goal Independence Cup 12-8.

MATCH DESCRIPTION: Intergame and Plano faced off in the Independence Cup 6-goal finals on July 10, 2004.  Plano got on the board first with a penalty conversion from Brent Mirikitani, followed by a successful run at the goal by Ralph Gutierrez making it 2-0 for Plano after one chukker.  Plano’s Scott Lancaster, added to the lead with the first goal of the second chukker followed by Intergame’s Felix Anzorreguy two quick goals to close the gap to one goal.  Mirikitani converted a penalty for Plano to close the scoring in the second chukker with Plano maintaining a 4-2 lead.  The third chukker was all Plano with another penalty conversion from Mirikitani, making it his third so far, and Gutierrez scored his second goal of the match.  Plano took a 6-2 lead after the three chukkers.  In the fourth chukker, Lancaster scored for Plano making it 7-2, but Intergame took over as Anzorreguy scored an impressive three goals and assisted Sophie Gleeson on another goal to make the score 7-6 in favor of Plano.  Plano’s Gutierrez made his third goal of the match for Plano to stop Intergame’s comeback.  As the final hour went off Plano held on for an 8-6 win in the Independence Cup 6 Goal Finals.

 Final Match: Henry S. Miller def. Eureka Holdings 10 - 8

MATCH DESCRIPTION: Two Las Colinas Polo Club undefeated teams, Eureka Holdings and Henry S. Miller, faced off in the finals of the 8-goal Lamborghini Cup on June 12, 2004.  Henry S. Miller started the scoring with Isidro Olivas’ penalty three followed by another from the field for a 2-0 lead, but Brent Mirikitani scored a penalty two for Eureka Holdings to make it 2-1 after one chukker.  In the second chukker, Mirikitani was back to tie things up with a goal early in the chukker, followed by Henry S. Miller’s rally with Isidro Olivas scoring twice from the field followed by a goal from Vaughn Miller to make it 5-2 after two chukkers.  Again, Mirikitani led with a converted penalty two for Eureka, but Isidro Olivas answered with a penalty two for Henry S. Miller.  Eureka’s Jorge Olivas scored late in the third to close the third chukker in favor of Henry S. Miller 6-4.  Isidro Olivas scored first in the fourth to add to the lead while Mirikitani hit from the penalty stripe.  Jorge Olivas cut the deficit to one, but again Isidro Olivas had the answer with yet another goal.  Eureka got two more goals from Mirikitani, one on a penalty, to tie the match 8-8 going into the last chukker.  Not to be defeated, Henry S. Miller came back strong with penalty conversion from Vaughn Miller for the lead.  Isidro Olivas scored from the field to put away Eureka Holdings hopes for a title as Henry S. Miller won 10-8.

 Intergame def. CMC 10 - 8

MATCH DESCRIPTION: The Share-A-Smile Foundation, a Collin County-based charity hosted a fundraising event at the Las Colinas Polo Club’s Hibernia Championship field during the final match of the CMC Cup.  After team Intergame made their first 12-goal finals in the three tournaments, they earned the spot to face off with CMC.  This season, team CMC won the USPA Western Regional Classic and lost only one 12-goal final. 

As the first chukker began, CMC started with one goal on the handicap.  CMC started the action with Brent Mirikitani converting a penalty to add to the handicap goal followed by Billy Mudra adding to the lead with a penalty four.  Intergame quickly fought back with a penalty from Felix Anzorreguy and a goal from Mason Wroe making it 3-2 but CMC’s Mudra scored from the field to get CMC up 4-2 after one chukker.  The second chukker was quiet with no scoring, however the third chukker was all Intergame’s as Felix Anzorreguy took the lead by scoring three goals from the field making it 5-4 Intergame at the half.  Chukker four was even as CMC’s two goals from the field, one each from Mudra and Will Tankard, were matched by Intergame’s Anzorreguy and Jorge Olivas making it 7-6.  The fifth chukker saw Intergame maintain the lead with Anzorreguy scoring two and CMC only answering with one goal from Mirikitani making it 9-7 at the end of chukker five. 

In chukker six Anzorreguy added to the board giving Intergame a three goal lead.  Mirikitani added a late goal but Intergame was more than CMC could overcome leaving Intergame victorious 10-8.  Felix Anzorreguy was named the game’s most valuable player after scoring eight goals.

Tiburon def. Buffalo/Ivanhoe 8-7

MATCH DESCRIPTION: Tiburon meets Buffalo/Ivanhoe in the six goal Texas Cup Finals.  Tiburon started with one goal on handicap to lead 1-0 at the start.  Quickly, Craig Fraser scored on Tiburon to even the score only to have Robert Payne answer for Tiburon to put them back in the lead 2-1.  Still in the first Billy Mudra tied the game again and then added a late goal to give Buffalo/Ivanhoe a 3-2 lead after one chukker.  Susan Bekaert converted two penalty threes to extend the lead in the second chukker making it 5-2, but Tiburon fought back with two late goals, one each from Robert Payne and Gene Evans making it 5-4 at the half.  The third chukker belonged to Tiburon with Evans tying the score followed by goals from Collen Clark and Rob Payne III giving Tiburon the last five goals and a 7-5 lead after three chukkers.  The match got tight in the final chukker as Billy Mudra pushed to get Buffalo/Ivanhoe back on the board with a penalty four conversion, and Craig Fraser tied the match at 7-7 as time wound down.  With twenty seconds remaining, Tiburon’s Robert Payne had a penalty two conversion giving the nod to Tiburon, 8-7 in an excellent match.

MATCH DESCRIPTION: Kicking off the Las Colinas Polo Club season early, the USPA Henry S. Miller Cup provided a great start with great polo action and socializing including the 3rd Annual Polo on the Lawn benefiting the Family Place.  Seven teams turned out for this first annual tournament.  The finals took place on Sunday May 2nd with Tiburon and Bar Z.  Tiburon started with one goal on handicap and with the teams scoreless in the first chukker, Tiburon held the lead on the handicap goal.  The second chukker was more active with Robert Payne converting a penalty and scoring from the field for Tiburon giving them a three goal lead.  Bar Z’s Gabriel Gracida finally got Bar Z on the board with a late penalty conversion late in the 2nd chukker to make the score Tiburon three Bar Z one.  Rob Payne III scored the lone goal of the third chukker extending the lead to four to one.  Bar Z tried to make a run early in the fourth chukker as Alex Gleeson scored to narrow the gap, but Robert Payne removed any doubt as he scored the next two goals to clinch it for Tiburon by a final score of six to four.
