Gilroy, CA - Sonoma Valley pulled out the guns to get the "Winery Cup" in a Round Robin at The Silicon Valley Polo Club. It wasn't easy for the winning team to get 1st place. In the first match Sonoma Valley (Cathy Smiddy/Michael Clark, Jim Hunter, Christine Finerty and Tracy Connor) defeated Napa Valley (Tim Westin, Veronika, Jim Chesley, Carrie and John Walworth). From the far end of the field Hunter flew like an eagle and scored the first goal of the match. In the second chukker Connor, in a tricky play, scored and put his team up to 2-0. After the half time C. Walworth of Napa team scored a shot in front of the goal. The MVP of the tournament, Jim Hunter, answered right away with two penalty shots, putting his team up to 4-1. In the last chukker Napa got serious and started to raise the goal flag. Hunter scored again with an undefended penalty shot, but Napa answered the challenge. C. Wolworth made a nice run through the goal to add another point to the score sheet. Chesley scored twice, but it wasn't enough catch Sonoma. Final score 6-4 in favor of Sonoma Valley.

In the second match Silicon Valley (Julia Belford, Dave Saraniti, Chris Tack, Bill Craycroft and Ted Schlosser) defeated Napa Valley. Belford opened the game with the first goal.  Her goal was answered by Walworth to tie the game. In the second chukker Saraniti converted a penalty two and put Silicon ahead by 1.  Chesley tied the game with a nice goal. After the half time Belford scored a penalty from the spot. Schlosser followed up with another goal made with a beautiful cut shot from 70 yards out. Belford made a very nice run from mid-field and scored to put her team ahead by 3 goals. Napa didn't give up and Veronika made an exciting goal. They kept trying, but they didn’t have enough time to close the gap. The final score was 5-3 in favor of Silicon Valley.

In the next match Sonoma Valley had to fasten their seat belts to beat an anxious Silicon Valley. Schlosser opened with a score for Silicon Valley.  His goal was answered with a goal scored by Connor. Smiddy tapped the ball into the mouth of the goal to put her team up 2-1. In the second chukker Saraniti showed us once again his accuracy on penalties.  He scored twice and put his team up by one. At the end of the chukker, after a enormous dipute, Smiddy scored from 50 yards out and held the opposing  team scorless. In the last chukker Connor lead the team to victory with another goal. Saraniti answered again with a penalty two goal. Schlosser passed the ball to Craycroft, but there was not enough time to score. The final score 5-4 in favor of Sonoma.
