WELLINGTON, FL Ten-goaler Adam Snow of Henley House and 8-goaler Sugar Erskine of Goshen believe their teams shook off the first-game rust and expect a tough game against each other in the 22-goal Iglehart Cup final Sunday at 3 p.m. at International Polo Club Palm Beach.
Henley House, led by Snow’s six goals, defeated Crab Orchard 11-9 in the semifinals. Goshen, led by Erskine’s five goals, beat San Saba 9-6 to advance to the final.
“They’re a very tough team,” Erskine said about Henley House. “Adam (Snow) is very controlled and specific on how he wants his players to play. They look very prepared. We’re a fun team and hopefully we’ll score more goals in the final.”
Snow and Erskine were teammates during the recent 2004 high-goal season in Argentina.
“It will be complicated because they are a very solid team,” said Erskine’s teammate, 9-goaler Pancho Bensadon. “But finals are finals. The last final we played here, we were very good,” referring to the 2004 U.S. Open, which Bensadon and Erskine helped lead Isla Carroll to victory.
Snow is very confident about his team, even though they had only one practice before the semifinals.
“I’ve played a lot with Francisco (Lanusse) and Carlucho (Arellano),” said Snow. “I played in Aiken with Wayne (Grover) and he’s a very disciplined player. It’s fun to work with him.”
Henley House features patron Wayne Grover of Unionville, PA in his first high-goal tournament, a 1-goaler, at No. 1, with 6-goaler Lanusse at No. 2 and Snow at No. 3. Five-goaler Arellano, a 26-year-old who grew up in Wellington, will line up at No. 4. Henley House was forced to switch its lineup after Alan Martinez was in an automobile accident while ferrying his horses. He is expected to return to lineup in February along with patron Erik Juvonen.
Goshen features patron Irvin Abell, a 0-goaler, at No. 1, with Erskine at No. 2 and Bensadon at No. 3 while veteran Stewart Armstrong, a 4-goaler, will line up at No. 4.
The 22-goal Iglehart Cup, which returns after a one-year hiatus, kicks off the second season of high-goal polo at International Polo Club Palm Beach, already acknowledged at the premier polo club in the United States. The tournament is named for one of polo’s leading families, Hall of Famers Stewart and Philip Iglehart. The tournament was not played in 2004 because of scheduling conflicts. Tommy Lee Jones’ San Saba was the 2003 champion and John Goodman’s Isla Carroll won the tournament in 2002.
The 2005 season features six high-goal tournaments three 22-goal tourneys and three 26-goal tournaments. Following the Iglehart Cup will be the Joe Barry Memorial
Cup and the Ylvisaker Cup. The 26-goal season opens with the Hall of Fame Cup, followed by the C.V. Whitney Cup and concluding with the Stanford Financial Group U.S. Open.
At least 20 high-goal teams are expected to participate in part of the 2005 season, according to polo manager Jimmy Newman, surpassing last season’s 17 teams.
