MILLARVILLE REGISTERS 11-8 VICTORY OVER OLD PUEBLO
IN JOE BARRY CUP AT INTERNATIONAL POLO CLUB PALM BEACH

WELLINGTON – Seven-goalers Frederick Mannix and Luis Escobar scored five goals each to lead Millarville over Old Pueblo 11-8 and into sole possession of first place in Division I in the 22-goal Joe Barry Memorial Cup polo tournament Wednesday at International Polo Club Palm Beach.

In another divisional game, 8-goaler Julio Arellano scored five goals to lead Skeeterville past Santa Clara 13-10. Both teams are tied for second with 1-1 records.

Old Pueblo took a 1-0 lead on 9-goaler Matias Magrini’s penalty shot before Millarville countered with four consecutive goals, two each by Mannix and Escobar, to take a controlling 4-1 advantage after the first chukker.

Millarville used a strong passing attack to involve all four players to control the ball and not allow Old Pueblo to double-team anyone. Millarville continued to dominate the entire game, taking a 10-5 lead into the sixth chukker.

Old Pueblo rallied in the sixth chukker, and could have cut into lead even further, but Jeff Hall missed two 60-yard penalty shots. Mannix clinched the victory with a 30-yard penalty shot with 29 seconds remaining.

Daniel Roenisch added one goal for Millarville (2-0) while Nicolas Intriago did not score. Magrini led Old Pueblo (0-2) with four goals while 8-goaler Jeff Hall and patron John Hall scored two goals apiece.

Skeeterville scored the first two goals and never trailed. There were two ties in the game, at 2-2 in the second chukker and at 8-8 in the fifth. Skeeterville responded with three unanswered goals, two by patron Skeeter Johnston and one by Julio Arellano, to put the game out of reach in the fifth chukker.

Johnston and Owen Rinehart scored three goals each for Skeeterville while Stevie Orthwein added two goals.

Andre Diniz led Santa Clara with six goals while Fabio Diniz added three goals and Jeff Blake scored once. Patron Francisco Escobar did not score.

The Joe Barry Memorial Cup is named after American polo legend Joe Barry, who died on May 18, 2002 at the age of 58. Born and raised in Texas, he achieved a 9-goal rating and dominated polo in the United States in the 1960s and 1970s. Barry won six U.S. Open championships, three Gold Cups, three Silver Cups as well as the Coronation and Camacho Cup trophies. One of the greatest No. 4s in polo history, Joe Barry was elected to the Polo Hall of Fame in 1999.
