Adam Snow Leads Henley House Over San Saba 12-11
In Joe Barry Cup

WELLINGTON – Ten-goaler Adam Snow scored the final three goals, including the tying goal with two second remaining and the game-winner with 4:09 left in overtime, to spark Henley House over San Saba 12-11 in the 22-goal Joe Barry Memorial Cup polo tournament Thursday at International Polo Club Palm Beach.

In other games, 9-goaler Agustin Merlos scored nine goals to lead Crab Orchard over Pony Express 13-8 and 10-goaler Pite Merlos scored seven goals to pace Lechuza Caracas past Goshen 16-12. Crab Orchard and Lechuza Caracas remain tied for first place in Division III with 2-0 records.

San Saba scored twice in an 87-second span to take an 11-9 lead with 2:23 left in the game, setting up Snow’s heroics.

Snow’s goal cut the margin to 11-10 with 47 seconds remaining. Following the bowl-in at midfield, Snow’s tapped the ball once, then dribbled three times before tapping home the tying goal with two seconds left.

Both teams missed scoring opportunities in overtime before Snow’s shot from 50 yards hit the right goal post and bounced over the line for the victory.

Snow finished with seven goals for Henley House (1-1) while Francisco Lanusse and Carlucho Arellano added two goals each. Patron Wayne Grover scored one goal.

Hector Galindo and Gaston Von Wernich scored five goals apiece for San Saba (0-2) while Toto Collardin added one goal. Patron Tommy Lee Jones did not score.

Crab Orchard scored four consecutive goals, three by Merlos, to break a 6-6 halftime tie en route to victory. Pony Express cut the margin to 10-8 late in the fifth chukker on goals by Alex Agote and Ramiro Egaria, but Crab Orchard responded with three consecutive goals to close out the win.

Three-goaler Julio Gracida added three goals for Crab Orchard while his father, Memo, a 9-goaler, scored one goal. Patron George Rawlings did not score.

Sapo Caset Jr. led Pony Express (0-2) with three goals while Agote and Egaria added two goals apiece. Patron Bob Daniels did not score.

Ignacio Toccalino added five goals for Lechuza Caracas while Gaston Urturi and patron Victor Vargas scored two goals each.

Pancho Bensadon led Goshen (1-1) with six goals while Sugar Erskine and Stewart Armstrong scored two goals each. Patron Irvin Abell did not score.

The Joe Barry Memorial Cup is named after American polo legend Joe Barry, who died on May 18, 2002 at the age of 58. Born and raised in Texas, he achieved a 9-goal rating and dominated polo in the United States in the 1960s and 1970s. Barry won six U.S. Open championships, three Gold Cups, three Silver Cups as well as the Coronation and Camacho Cup trophies. One of the greatest No. 4s in polo history, Joe Barry was elected to the Polo Hall of Fame in 1999.
