WELLINGTON Six-goaler Ignacio Toccalino, playing in his first high-goal tournament in the United States, scored six goals to lead Lechuza Caracas over San Saba 12-9 Monday in the 22-goal Joe Barry Memorial Cup polo tournament at International Polo Club Palm Beach.
The victory qualified Lechuza Caracas (3-0) for Thursday’s semifinals, as did Crab Orchard (3-0), which defeated Goshen 12-4 behind 9-goaler Agustin Merlos’ seven goals. The semifinal matchups will be determined later today (Tuesday).
In other games, Fabio Diniz scored five goals to lead Santa Clara over Millarville 10-8; 10-goaler Adam Snow scored eight goals to pace Henley House past Pony Express 16-10 and Jeff Hall scored six goals to spark Old Pueblo past Skeeterville 12-11 in overtime.
Henley House and Millarville will join Crab Orchard and Lechuza Caracas in the semifinals, based on net goals. Henley House finished with plus-6 and Millarville finished with plus-3 goals. Santa Clara, which tied with Henley House and Millarville with 2-1 records, finished with plus-1 goals and did not qualify for the semifinals.
The Joe Barry Memorial Cup final is Sunday at 3 p.m.
Lechuza Caracas scored five consecutive goals in the third and fourth chukkers, two by Toccalino, to snap a 5-5 tie. San Saba responded with four unanswered goals to trail 10-9 midway through the sixth chukker. But Toccalino scored on a breakaway with 2:48 left and added an 80-yard forehand with 1:30 remaining to clinch the victory. Toccalino now has 17 goals in three games.
Ten-goaler Pite Merlos added three goals for Lechuza Caracas while Juan Cruz Guebera, substituting for patron Victor Vargas, who was out of town on business, added two goals and Gaston Urturi scored one goal.
Gaston Von Wernich led San Saba (0-3) with five goals and Toto Collardin added four goals. Hector Galindo and Dawn Jones, subbing for her husband, Tommy Lee Jones, who was out of town on business, did not score.
Crab Orchard scored the first three goals and never were challenged against Goshen. Nine-goaler Memo Gracida added four goals and his son, Julio, scored once. Patron George Rawlings did not score. Merlos leads the tournament with 30 goals in three games.
Pancho Bensadon scored two goals and Sugar Erskine added one goal for Goshen (1-2). Patron Irvin Abell and Stewart Armstrong did not score.
Andre Diniz added four goals for Santa Clara (2-1) while Jeff Blake scored one goal. Patron Francisco Escobar did not score. Frederick Mannix led Millarville (2-1) with four goals while Luis Escobar added three goals, Nicolas Intriago had one and Daniel Roenisch did not score.
Francisco Lanusse added five goals and patron Wayne Grover scored three goals for Henley House (2-1). Snow is tied for second in scoring with 19 goals in three games. Alex Agote and Ramiro Egana led Pony Express (0-3) with three goals apiece while Sapo Caset scored two goals. Patron Bob Daniels did not score.
Patron John Hall scored goals while Matias Magrini added two goals and Willie Hartnett scored one goal for Old Pueblo (1-2). Eight-goaler Julio Arellano scored nine goals to lead Skeeterville (1-2) while Owen Rinehart added two goals. Patron Skeeter Johnston and Stevie Orthwein did not score. Arellano is tied for second in scoring with 19 goals in three games.
