Lechuza Caracas, Millarville advance to finals of
Joe Barry Cup
WELLINGTON – Veteran 7-goaler Luis Escobar scored on a breakaway 21 seconds into overtime to rally Millarville over Crab Orchard 16-15 in the semifinals of the 22-goal Joe Barry Memorial Cup polo tournament Thursday at International Polo Club Palm Beach.

Millarville (3-1) plays Lechuza Caracas (4-0), which defeated Henley House 10-7, in the final Sunday at 3 p.m.

Escobar’s goal capped an improbable comeback for the Canadian-based Millarville team, which outscored Crab Orchard 8-3 over the final two chukkers and overshadowed a 12-goal performance by 9-goaler Agustin Merlos.

Millarville trailed 12-7 after the fourth chukker, but opened the fifth with sandwiched four goals, two by Frederick Mannix and one each by Escobar and Daniel Roenisch, around a score by Merlos to narrow the margin to 13-11 with 2:18 remaining. Merlos responded with two goals in 72 seconds to increase Crab Orchard’s lead to 15-11 heading into the final chukker.

Millarville started strong in the sixth chukker, led by Mannix, who scored two goals and assisted on Roenisch’s goal, to cut the margin to 15-14 with 3:53 remaining.

Merlos then missed a 60-yard penalty shot and Escobar converted his opportunity with 2:03 left to tie the game at 15-15. It was the fourth tie of the match. Merlos missed another 60-yard penalty shot with 57 seconds remaining in the game, sending the game into overtime.

Escobar and Mannix finished with six goals each while Roenisch and Nicolas Intriago added two goals apiece. Mannix leads Millarville with 24 goals in four games.

Merlos finished with 42 goals in four games. Memo Gracida added three goals for Crab Orchard (3-1) while Julio Gracida and patron George Rawlings did not score.

Six-goaler Ignacio Toccalino, playing in his first high-goal tournament in the United States, scored six goals to lead Lechuza Caracas. He leads Lechuza with 23 goals.

Lechuza scored three consecutive goals, two by Toccalino, to snap a 4-4 halftime tie en route to victory. Henley House cut the margin to two, at 7-5 with 1:22 left in the fifth chukker on Carlucho Arellano’s short backshot but could not get any closer the rest of the game.

Ten-goaler Pite Merlos added three goals, all in the second half for Lechuza (4-0). Gaston Urturi added one goal while patron Victor Vargas did not score.

Carlucho Arellano led Henley House (2-2) with three goals while Francisco Lanusse added two goals. Ten-goaler Adam Snow, the team’s leading scorer with 19 goals in the previous three games, was held to one goal. Patron Wayne Grover also scored one goal.
