San Saba, Black Watch, Skeeterville Open With Victories Saturday in
Ylvisaker Cup Action at International Polo Club Palm Beach
WELLINGTON, FL – Eight-goaler Hector Galindo scored eight goals, including the clinching goal with less than a minute remaining, to spark San Saba over White Birch 14-12 in a first-round game of the 22-goal Ylvisaker Cup Saturday at International Polo Club Palm Beach.

In other games, 9-goaler Facundo Pieres and 6-goaler Nacho Figueras scored five goals apiece as Black Watch defeated Santa Clara 12-9 and Skeeterville dominated Goshen 13-6.

San Saba led most of the game, building up a four-goal margin at 12-8 after five chukkers. White Birch cut the margin to one, 13-12 on patron Peter Brant’s 30-yard penalty shot, but could not tie the game.

Toto Collardin added four goals for San Saba (1-0) while patron Tommy Lee Jones and Gaston Von Wernich scored one goal each.

Ten-goaler Mariano Aguerre and Brant scored four goals each to lead White Birch (0-1) while Del Walton had three goals and Tomas Franco added one.

Pieres and Figueras each scored three goals in the second half as Black Watch

(1-0) pulled away. Tomas Pieres added two goals while patron Neil Hirsch did not score.

Fabio Diniz led Santa Clara (0-1) with five goals and Andre Diniz added four goals. Patron Francisco Escobar and Jeff Blake did not score.

Skeeterville (1-0) outscored Goshen 8-1 over the final four chukkers en route to victory. Julio Arellano led the winners with five goals while patron Skeeter Johnston and Owen Rinehart added four goals each. Stevie Orthwein did not score.

Sugar Erskine led Goshen (0-1) with three goals while Pancho Bensadon added two goals. Patron Irvin Abell and Stewart Armstrong did not score.

 Sixteen teams, the largest field of the season, have entered the 22-goal Ylvisaker Cup. Crab Orchard defeated Black Watch 13-8 in last year’s final.

Crab Orchard, led by 9-goalers Agustin Merlos and Memo Gracida, opens defense of its title today (Sunday) at 3 p.m. against Airstream.

Charismatic 1993 French Open doubles champions Luke and Murphy Jensen will be attending the polo match, hitting prize-winning tennis balls into the stadium at halftime, including tickets to the upcoming Millennium International Tennis Championships in Delray Beach.

Teams were split into four divisions and will play three qualifying games with the top two teams in each of the divisions advancing to the quarterfinals. The quarterfinals are scheduled for Saturday, February 12 and Sunday, February 13. The semifinals are set for Thursday, February 17 and the final is Sunday, February 20 at 3 p.m.

The Ylvisaker Cup in named in honor of William T. “Bill” Ylvisaker, a polo pioneer who founded Palm Beach Polo and Country Club in the late 1970s and was elected into the Polo Hall of Fame in 1996. Ylvisaker has won numerous major polo tournaments, including the prestigious U.S. Open in 1972.
