The Federation of International Polo (FIP) President, Glen Holden, announced that FIP has awarded the presentation of the FIP World Championship VIII Zone Playoffs for the European Zone to Italy and for the South American Zone to Uruguay. The finals of these events will take place in Mexico, in 2007.
After announcing the two Zone Playoff locations, FIP President, Glen Holden said, “I am very pleased that Italy will once again host another FIP event. Uruguay has also played host to FIP tournaments that were very successful for both the players and the spectators. I look forward to traveling to both of these countries for the exciting Playoff games.”
For the Eight FIP World Championship, the federation's most ambitious and important international event; FIP plans to expand the number of participating countries to 30 competing in the zone playoff system and has already begun to make plans. The FIP World Championship VII held in Chantilly, France in 2004 featured eight national teams that qualified through a demanding and highly competitive zone playoff system, which included 28 country teams participating worldwide.
The North America, Central America and Caribbean Zone Playoffs were awarded to Mexico. New Zealand was awarded the presentation of the African, Asian, Oceania Zone and plans to present the Playoff early in March of 2007.
FIP, currently with headquarters in Beverly Hills, CA, was founded in 1982 and currently represents the national polo associations of more than 80 countries. In addition to organizing international tournaments, FIP also develops international tournaments for children, conducts umpiring and coaching seminars and encourages participation in the sport of polo at all levels and ages.
