The First Annual Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf Polo Challenge was held July 16th and 17th at the Will Rogers Polo Club in Los Angeles. The July 16th preliminary games saw the Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf team of the Brittan boys (Graydon and Mickey Brittan) together with Bill Davis and Susu “Boom Boom” Dillon taking on the West LA team of Leigh Brecheen, Chuck Stanislawski, Bobby Sonnenblick and Gustavo DeGrief. It came right down to the wire, and a few last minute goals made the 9 to 5 victory for The Coffee Bean seem like a bigger margin of victory that it actually was. M. Brittan lead with 4 goals, Davis scored 3 and G. Brittan scored 2. Brecheen led her team with 3 goals and Stanislawski and Sonnenblick each added one.

The second preliminary game was a match between Atlant (Bolko Kissing, Toto Deyvoll, Hannah (Moose) Taylor and Jeanne Darquea) versus the grande decaf Starbacks (pun intended) team of Soheil Goel, Andrew Bossom, Gerhard Heusch and Malik Irbrahim. There were over 30 shots on goals, but tight defense on both sides caused only 7 to make it between the posts. Starbacks won by a 5 to 2 margin, with Goel scoring all 5. Kissling and Deyvoll each had a goal for Atlant.
Before the Sunday finals everyone was treated to a cup of caffeine inspiration courtesy of Sunny Sassoon and The Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf. Sassoon replaced Dillon for The Coffee Bean team, and they jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead. Starbacks capitalized on several missed penalty shots and came back strong to win by a 5-2 final score. Davis, Sassoon and G. Heusch each had 1 goal for their teams. Bossom lead the Starbacks team with 4 goals, 2 assists and 3 saves, earning him MVP honors. Sassoon’s horse Tava was named best playing pony.
The club would like to thank Sunny Sassoon and the Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf for their generous support of the tournament.
