July 13th, '05: Buckleigh Farm over Bloomfield in President's Cup Opener, 14-8 @ Saratoga Polo Club.
After an extended weekend off due to rain, Saratoga Polo resumed its tournament schedule with the inaugural match of the 2005 United States Polo Association President’s Cup. Buckleigh Farm came out on top in the opener over the local Bloomfield squad with a final score of 14-8.
Starting the match a goal up on handicap, Buckleigh Farm relied offensively on the 1-2 punch of Ignacio Saenz and Luis Galvan to propel them to victory. Their scoring flurries in the first, third and fifth chukkers propelled Buckleigh ahead in an otherwise tight match. Saenz finished the contest with 5 markers and Galvan led all scorers with 7.
Bloomfield, never trailing far from Buckleigh, was led by Cuko Escapite with 4 tallies. He received support on both sides of the field from his teammates David Eldredge and the husband-wife team of Will and Tab Orthwein.
Matches for both the USPA President’s Cup and the Saratoga County Chamber of Commerce Cup will be played this weekend at Saratoga Polo. Matches are scheduled this weekend for Friday, July 15 and Sunday, July 17. Both matches start at 5:30 and all matches are open to the public.
