This year’s Coronation Cup was once again held at Guards Polo Club who are celebrating their 50th anniversary this year.   The weather was unfortunately typically British – raining!   Despite this, the weather did not detract the 25,000 spectators from taking their seats at 3.15 pm for the Coronation Cup and amazingly the rain stopped and the sun shone.

The teams this year were England v Australia.   Playing for England in red and white were Henry Brett (7) Captain, brothers Mark Tomlinson (6) and Luke Tomlinson (7) and making his debut appearance for England – Malcolm Borwick (6).   Australia playing in yellow and green were Glen Gilmore (7) Captain, Damien Johnston (6), Ruiki Baillieu (8) and Mike Todd (6).

Henry Brett scored first for England which was the only goal in the first chukka putting England in the lead 2-0.   The second chukka saw Luke Tomlinson and Glen Gilmore scoring goals and after this chukka the crowd were invited to tread the divots.  By the end of the 3rd chukka and half time England were in the lead 4-3.

The second half started well for England with Henry Brett scoring another fantastic goal and at the end of the 4th chukka England were still in the lead.   Once again the crowd were invited to tread the divots and in the Royal Box, Her Majesty the Queen was served “afternoon tea”!

Australia scored a ‘cracking’ and badly needed goal to put them back in the game at the start of the 5th chukka making the score 5-5 – all to play for now – then to huge cheers from the crowd Luke Tomlinson scored for England but tap-tap-tap Glen Gilmore then scores for Australia making the score 6-6 at the end of the 5th chukka.

Into the 6th chukka – Australia went into the lead for the first time 7-6 but with 30 second left of the match Luke Tomlinson scores as the bell goes making the final score after six chukkas 7-7.

For the first time at the Cartier, the match goes into extra time into a 7th chukka with the score at 7-7.  It was now sudden death – the first team to score wins and Ruiki Bailleu scores for Australia – Australia won the Coronation Cup 8-7.

The presentation of the Coronation Cup was made by Her Majesty the Queen to Australia.   The Queen also presented the Pegasus trophy to the player of the match which was Glen Gilmore of Australia and the Cadensa saddle for the best playing pony was won by “Josie” ridden by Henry Brett four times in four different chukkas.

A good day for Australian sport in England – not only did they win the Coronation Cup but also the ‘Ashes’ at Lords Cricket Ground.
