July 29th, '05: BUCKLEIGH FARM CONTINUES TO ROLL IN PRESIDENT’S CUP AT SARATOGA POLO
Buckleigh Farm made it two squeakers in a row as they edged out Sugar Maple in USPA Regional President’s Cup action at Saratoga Polo on Friday with a final score of 8-6. It was their second President’s Cup win in three days.
Buckleigh Farm got out in front in the first two chukkers with 3 goals from Ignacio Saenz, the evenings leading scorer. Sugar Maple’s Brad Limehouse responded with a goal apiece in both the second and third chukkers and teammate AJ Famiano brought the crowd to its feet with a spectacular buzzer-beater to end the third, leaving the match tied 3-3 at the half.
At the start of the second half, Saenz and Luis Galvan teamed up out of the gate to give Buckleigh Farm back its commanding lead. Holding Sugar Maple scoreless in the fourth chukker, they were up 7-3 by the middle of fifth. That’s when Sebastian Bonorino started to rally for Sugar Maple. Bonorino scored all 3 of his goals in the final two chukkers.
While they kept Buckleigh scoreless in the sixth and final chukker, Sugar Maple did not convert on enough opportunities at the end of the match to close the final margin.
Coming off these two wins, Buckleigh Farm will face Bloomfield in the final to this Regional US Polo Association President’s Cup at Saratoga Polo on Wednesday, August 3 at 5:30 pm. The winner qualifies to compete in other USPA sanctioned events during the winter season in Florida.
The next match at Saratoga Polo is The Whitney Cup on Sunday, July 31 at 5:30pm. The Whitney Cup is also the final to the Saratoga County Chamber of Commerce Cup, a tournament from earlier in the Saratoga Polo season that was postponed previously due to multiple rained out matches. Bloomfield is also up for that cup as they take on Gene’s Cleaning/Tackeria.
