July 31st, '05: Whitney Legacy Continues at Saratoga Polo - Socialite Mary Lou Whitney joins Saratoga Polo co-owner Jim Rossi and members of Gene’s Cleaning Tackeria and the Bloomfield Team for presentation of the coveted Whitney Cup on July 31 on the historic Saratoga Polo grounds in Saratoga, NY. Bloomfield ran up an early lead and let the clock wind down at Saratoga Polo during the July 31 match, capturing The Whitney Cup over Gene’s Cleaning Tackeria with a final score of 9-4. The match also was the final for the Saratoga County Chamber of Commerce Cup. The match was played on historic Whitney Field, established in 1898 William Collins Whitney, the grandfather of Mrs. Whitney’s late husband Cornelius Vanderbilt Whitney. Mrs. Whitney also presented individual trophies to both teams, a tradition she started so Prince Charles would never walk away empty handed when he would compete for The Whitney Cup when it was played in England.
