Aug 5th, '05: SHAMROCK CLAIMS SUMMER CLASSIC CUP
Crowds flocked to Saratoga Polo on Friday to catch a glimpse of John Walsh, host of America’s Most Wanted. They stayed, however, for some dazzling polo action as Walsh’s Shamrock team bested the Saratoga squad 10-5 to capture the Summer Classic Cup.
Saratoga, a special team comprised of players from local powerhouses such as Bloomfield, Sugar Maple and Gene’s Cleaning, started the match with a goal on handicap. That lead wouldn’t last as Max Segunda and Julian Hipwood notched a goal apiece in the first chukker, giving Shamrock a lead they wouldn’t forfeit for the rest of the match.
Segunda, who led all scorers with 8 goals, scored 3 more times in the first half. Combined with a tally from Walsh in the third chukker, Shamrock got in all the offense they would need by the end of the first half.
While Saratoga was held scoreless in the first four chukkers, the tide started to turn in the fifth and sixth. While holding Shamrock to just one goal in the final two chukkers, Brad Limehouse put in 3 goals and Rick Baum had 1. Despite this late drive, Saratoga didn’t have enough time to catch up to Shamrock’s impressive lead.
