Aug 12th, '05: STATEWIDE WINS TIMES UNION CUP AT SARATOGA POLO
Statewide, made their first appearance at Saratoga Polo’s 2005 season a memorable one as they edged out the Saratoga squad 9-8 to capture The Times Union Cup.
Statewide relied upon a true team effort to propel themselves to an early lead they held onto for the remainder of the match. Brian Meara, Juve Baez and Sebastian Bonorino notched in 3 goals apiece for the victors. At the number 4 position, Gene Gass defensively supported his teammates in the backfield.
Charles Hord struggled to keep Saratoga in the match with three goals in the first four chukkers. However, getting only one goal from his teammates (scored by Tony Coppola), it looked like Statewide had the game all but sewn up at the end of the fourth chukker with a score double their opponents, 8-4.
However, it was in the fifth that Pelon Escapite decided to make things interesting. Escapite, scoreless up to this point, exploded for 4 tallies in the fifth, suddenly making it a one-goal match.
Unfortunately for Saratoga, Escapite’s flurry in the fifth was the last of the evening’s offense; both teams were scoreless in the sixth and final chukker and Statewide held onto their one goal led to take home the Times Union Cup.

In addition: The match originally scheduled for today was Sugar Maple versus Bloomfield in tournament match for the Hector and Susan Barrantes Memorial Cup. It has been rescheduled to Saturday, August 13 at 10:30am. This match is open to the public and free of charge.
