RANCHO VALENCIA CUP KICKS OFF HIGH-GOAL POLO AT THE SAN DIEGO POLO CLUB - The Rancho Valencia Cup will kick off five weekends of high-goal polo at the San Diego Polo Club beginning September 2nd and concluding on October 2nd. Two levels of competition will be played in the tournament. Four teams are entered the 12-14 goal, or high-goal, division and eight teams in the 4-6 goal level. The finals will be played on Sunday, September 11th at 1:30 p.m. for the 4-6 goal and 3 p.m. for the high-goal. Following the Rancho Valencia Cup will be the Spreckels Cup from September 16th through October 2nd.

The Rancho Valencia Cup is one of the original tournaments to be played at the San Diego Polo Club, which was established in 1986 as the Rancho Santa Fe Polo Club. Chris Maloney's Voyager team won the tournament in 2004.

Some of the finest polo players in the world will compete at the club in the high-goal competition. Polo pros Mariano Fassetta (7-goal), Gaston Von Wernich (6-goal), Pedro Orellana (5-goal) and Inaki Echezerrata (4-goal) are from Argentina. Steve Dalton (6-goal) and Brad MacGibbon (2-goal) are from Canada. Graham Bray, the polo manager of the San Diego Polo Club, is a 5-goal rated player originally from New Zealand. Jason Crowder (4-goal) and Joseph Stuart (2-goal) are from the United States. San Diego patrons, or team sponsors, include Chris Maloney (1-goal), Lisa Bosstick (0-goal) and Chris Collins (2-goal).

The polo matches are open to the public. Sunday Polo is held every weekend through October 2nd. Two matches are played on Field 1 at 1:30 p.m. and 3 p.m. General admission is $5 per person. Children under 12 are free. Admission to the Members' Club is $25 and reservations are required. Brunch is served from 1-4 p.m. and costs $25 for adults, $12.50 for children under 12.
