Sept. 04, '05: GENE’S CLEANING/TACKERIA WIN AUTUMN LEAVE - Gene’s Cleaning/Tackeria came back from a early deficit and rallied late to win the final of the Autumn Leaves, the last tournament of the Saratoga Polo season, over Almendares 10-8 on Sunday.
Pelon Escapite led Gene’s Cleaning/Tackeria with 5 goals, including 3 in the sixth and final chukker to give his squad the lead for good. Juve Baez and Gene Gass each had a pair of tallies for the champions.
While Mario DeMendoza scored the first goal of the match, Almendares got the rest of its defense from Cuko Escapite, who scored at least one marker in every chukker except the first to finish with 7.
The Most Valuable Player was awarded to Tony Coppola. The KPMG Best Playing Pony went to two horses. One was Sabrina, Julian Hipwood’s mount in the fifth. The other was Gadiva, Coppola’s horse in the second.
