| Sept. 11, ’05: Surf’s up in Hanalei Bay. by Steve Crowder. They were surfing today and it was on land right here in San Diego. As you can tell the only surf up was the Bones (Ron Bonaguidi) who led Hanalei Bay. Bones (Ron Bonaguidi) and Hanalei Bay, a team with 4 flags on their team taking the high goal finals. Hanalei Bay has 1 player from south Africa (Brad MacGibbon), 1 American (Ron Bonaguidi) ,1 Canadian (Steve Dalton) and a Kiwi (Graham Bray) and they took the 2005 high goal title home.
They were smoking and Madison Square was burning right into the ground as Hanalei trailed only once all day. They seemed to disassemble Madison Square from the start. It was obvious early Madison Square was not on their game. Short shots and weak coverage was the main downfall. They never seemed to move the ball. It was always a tap and a windmill catching nothing but air. The game started out even. At the end of 2 it was even. At the end of 3 it was safe to say it was over, but a big rally in the 4th sent the boys from Hanalei Bay on a run and it never was a game. Mariano Fassetta made a run at them in the 6th, but it was too late. It was a very tough day on the black team (Madison Square). They failed to convert and that is a killer. It was a barn burner for Hanalei Bay and a burnt barn for Madison Square. Will they be able to come back? Well they have 5 days to wonder as the 2005 Spreckels started today, so we should see. Be there.
It was a war for the 6-goal as the Surfer (Diego Cossio) with Bullet Bob (Robert Kiger) and Zippy Bill Ziering were hard at it against undefeated Corleone Polo and their fearless leader Sir Sean Keys. Sean came out down, but not out as the boys of True Choice Polo got out to a 4 goal lead early, but this is when they woke the boys in red up. Corleone got right up and came flying back to stop the Surfing on them as the sea went flat and Sir Sean went faster and raced away to a 4 goal lead of their own in the 3rd. It was Zippy Bill Ziering making a huge run from downtown to finish with a smashing goal and the fight was on. Even Bullet Bob (Robert Kiger) and young gun Guillermo Etcheverry could not stop the red surge and Corleone Polo is the 2005 champs of the Rancho Valencia Cup 6 goal final.
