Final Game - Cedargate/Mather Polo defeated Applebee’s 10 9
Consolation Game - Equix defeated The Renegades 9 - 7
The Lexington Polo hosted the USPA National Amateur Cup at the Kentucky Horse Park September 18 through September 25. This 4 goal national tournament, which fielded 8 teams this year, is Lexington Polo Club’s annual premier event. Proceeds from the match benefited the Kentucky Horse Park Foundation and the American Red Cross.
On Sunday, September 18, the tournament kicked off with two rather lopsided games. Equix could not smolder the fire of Lexington Polo fueled by Lexington Polo Club’s manager, Jorge Vasquez. It looks like this 2 goaler has been sand-bagging it so far this season as he has never played more confidently and effectively. And Warhorse was no match for Applebee’s who handily defeated Warhorse 10 to 5.
The second round of games on September 20 and 23 sported more unbalanced polo. Cedargate/Mather Polo trounced The Renegades 9 to 3, Oakwood took Fairlawn 9 to 6, and then Applebee’s beat Oakwood 11 to 6. The only fairly competitive game in this round was between Cedargate/Mather Polo and Lexington Polo in which Cedargate/Mather won by 2 goals.
A more competitive game was to be had on Saturday, September 24, between The Renegades and Equix in the consolation finals. The teams were evenly matched and it was 8 to 7 in favor of Equix in the fifth chukker. However, the Renegades could not answer Luis Carrion’s last two goals so Equix won 9 to 7.
The final game, held on Sunday on the Kentucky Horse Park’s Man O’ War field, was a fiercely competitive match between Applebee’s and Cedargate/Mather Polo. The teams matched each other goal for goal with Tomas Gallegos of Applebee’s and Marcos Onetto of Cedargate/Mather as the high scorers. At the end of the fifth chukker, Applebee’s had a one point lead but Marcos Onetto of Cedargate/Mather sealed the team’s fate with two additional goals in the sixth to reign victorious, 10-9
Marcos Onetto received MVP for the game and his 9 year old Thoroughbred mare, Enigma, was the Best Playing Pony.
Steve Lane and Omar Viale, USPA certified umpires, umpired all the games. Thanks, guys!
A special thanks to Missy Maclin, Michelle Primm, and Jorge Vasquez for their successful organization and implementation of the games, ticket sales, catering, entertainment, and the list goes on and on.
