International Polo Club Palm Beach On Road to Recovery
After Hurricane Wilma

WELLINGTON, FL – International Polo Club Palm Beach, the premier high-goal polo club in the United States, suffered only minimal damage after being pounded by Hurricane Wilma and will be ready in plenty of time for the 2006 season, according to General Manager Michael C. Brown.

“Hurricane Wilma was worse than last year’s two hurricanes, but it only caused minor damage, such as broken roof tiles, fallen trees and moderate water damage,” said Brown. “General cleanup has begun and this will not adversely affect the opening of the club for the 2006 season. Our prayers and best wishes go out to those not so fortunate.”

The elegant Royal Palm trees lining the drive into the club and to the stadium survived the storm, which produced sustained winds of more than 100 miles per hour. Several of the club’s seven polo fields briefly became water-logged but will not experience permanent damage. The members’ private restaurants, the Mallet Grille and the Wanderers Room, survived virtually unscathed, as did the Spa and Fitness facility.

Most of the damage was decorative landscaping, although the fencing around the tennis courts was knocked down for the second year and the bleachers for general admission ticket-holders were tossed around, according to Brown.

The high-goal polo season begins Sunday, January 15 at 3 p.m. and continues through Sunday, April 23 with the final of the Stanford Financial Group U.S. Open Championship. More than 20 teams are expected to compete in five tournaments this year, with at least nine of the 11 10-goalers participating at some point.
