LOS ANGELES Earlier reports that Coachella might relocate to an alternate site were dispelled Monday when organizers released the dates for the seventh annual Coachella Valley Music & Arts Festival. The two- day international rock and dance mecca that last year drew a record 50,000 revelers to Empire’s three fields, is scheduled for Apr. 29-30 and will reportedly feature techno pop artists Depeche Mode.
Front man David Gahan revealed the news unexpectedly Sunday to an MTV reporter in an interview at KROQ-FM’s Almost Acoustic Christmas concert. The band has been touring since their October release of “Playing the Angel” featuring their hit single “Precious.”
“Are we allowed to say that?” guitarist Martin Gore asked Gahan during the interview with Corey Moss. Gahan said that he just didadding “And, you know, we are the best,” according to the report. The complete artist lineups are anticipated in January, according to event promoters Goldenvoice.
Polo fans who also enjoy “Coachella” might possibly catch their own faces in a new retrospective documentary “Coachella” directed by Drew Thomas. The film’s premiere is slated for Jan. 19 at the Orpheum Theatre in Los Angeles and chronicles legendary performers who have rocked the desert since Empire Polo Club owner Alex Haagen III sealed the deal for the festival’s 1999 debut. Expect to see clips from Morrissey, The Chemical Brothers, Radiohead, the White Stripes, the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Beck and Iggy & the Stooges along with many others.
Coldplay and Nine Inch Nails headlined “Coachella” last year.
