WELLINGTON, FL (February 1, 2006) Nine-goaler Matias Magrini converted a 20-yard penalty shot 43 seconds into overtime to lift New Bridge La Dolfina over Bendabout 12-11 Wednesday in a 22-goal Ylvisaker Cup polo match at International Polo Club Palm Beach.
Magrini finished with a team-high six goals while 10-goaler Adolfo Cambiaso added five goals for New Bridge La Dolfina (1-0).
New Bridge La Dolfina jumped out to a 6-1 lead early in the second chukker but Bendabout kept up the attack, finally tying the game at 10-10 on Miguel Novillo Astrada’s five-yard penalty shot with 1:00 left in the fifth chukker.
Cambiaso gave New Bridge La Dolfina an 11-10 lead 58 seconds into the final chukker when he picked up a loose ball and dribbled about 220 yards on a breakaway. Both teams missed opportunities throughout the remainder of the sixth chukker. In the final 30 seconds, New Bridge La Dolfina tried to clear a loose ball, but Astrada backed it toward goal and 9-goaler Lucas Monteverde stuffed it between the posts with six seconds remaining to send it into overtime.
Ten-goaler Miguel Novillo Astrada finished with six goals to lead Bendabout (0-2) while Lucas Monteverde scored four goals and Will Johnston had one goal. Patron Gillian Johnston did not score.
Action in the Ylvisaker Cup continues today (Thursday) with a doubleheader beginning at 11 a.m. when Skeeterville (1-0) plays San Saba (0-0) followed by Catamount (0-0) against Pony Express (0-0).
The Ylvisaker Cup in named in honor of William T. “Bill” Ylvisaker, a polo pioneer, who founded Palm Beach Polo and Country Club in the late 1970s. A former Chairman of the USPA, Ylvisaker was elected into the Polo Hall of Fame in 1996. Ylvisaker has won numerous major polo tournaments, including the prestigious U.S. Open in 1972.
The polo matches are open to the public. General admission for the Sunday games at International Polo Club Palm Beach is $10 for adults. Children under 12 enter for free. Tickets may be purchased at the gate on the day of the game.
