WELLINGTON, FL (February 2, 2006) Seven-goaler Nicolas Roldan scored six goals as Pony Express began defense of its title with a dominating 16-6 triumph over Catamount Thursday in the 22-goal Ylvisaker Cup opener for both teams at International Polo Club Palm Beach.
In other action, 8-goaler Julio Arellano scored seven goals to lead Skeeterville over San Saba 12-8 and sole possession of first place in Division I.
Pony Express scored the first four goals of the game and did not let up, continually building the margin. Pony Express led 8-2 at halftime, 11-3 at the end of the fourth chukker and 14-5 heading into the final chukker.
Gonzalo Von Wernich and Rookie Bailleau added five goals each for Pony Express (1-0) while patron Bob Daniels did not score.
Eight-goaler Jeff Hall led Catamount (0-1) with three goals while Jeff Blake and Todd Offen added two goals each. Patron Scott Devon did not score.
Skeeterville jumped out to an 8-2 halftime advantage and coasted to victory as San Saba never got closer than four goals in the second half.
Owen Rinehart and Stevie Orthwein added two goals apiece and patron Skeeter Johnston had one goal for Skeeterville (2-0).
Seven-goaler Toto Collardin led San Saba (0-1) with four goals while 10-goaler Javier Novillo Astrada scored two goals and Inaki Echezarreta and patron Dawn Jones had one goal apiece. Dawn Jones filled in for her husband, Tommy Lee Jones, who was away on business.
Action in the Ylvisaker Cup continues today (Friday) at 1 p.m. when Lechuza Caracas, led by 10-goaler Sebastian Merlos, plays White Birch, led by 10-goaler Mariano Aguerre.
The Ylvisaker Cup in named in honor of William T. “Bill” Ylvisaker, a polo pioneer who founded Palm Beach Polo and Country Club in the late 1970s. A former Chairman of the USPA, Ylvisaker was elected into the Polo Hall of Fame in 1996. Ylvisaker has won numerous major polo tournaments, including the prestigious U.S. Open in 1972.
The polo matches are open to the public. General admission for the Sunday games at International Polo Club Palm Beach is $10 for adults. Children under 12 enter for free. Tickets may be purchased at the gate on the day of the game.
