WELLINGTON, FL (February 6, 2006) Ten-goaler Agustin Merlos scored eight goals to lead Reata over defending champion Pony Express 11-8 in 22-goal Ylvisaker Cup action Monday at International Polo Club Palm Beach.
In other action, Adolfo Cambiaso scored 10 goals to pace New Bridge La Dolfina over Catamount 14-13; 10-goaler Sebastian Merlos scored eight goals to lead Lechuza Caracas to a 14-12 triumph over San Saba and ERG used a balanced attack en route to a 13-10 win over Airstream.
Victories for Reata and ERG moved them into a tie for second place with 2-0 record and a plus 4 goal differential. New Bridge La Dolfina is in fourth with a 2-0 record and a plus 2 goal differential. Skeeterville is in first place with a 2-0 record and a plus 12 goal differential. The top four teams advance to the semifinals.
Reata scored two goals in a 61-second span late in the fourth chukker, one each by Santiago Allaria and Merlos, to snap a 5-5 tie.
Pony Express rallied to within one goal twice, the last at 8-7 with 2:34 left in the fifth chukker on Nicolas Roldan’s 30-yard penalty shot, but failed to tie the score. Roldan also missed a 60-yard penalty shot late in the fifth chukker and another one early in the sixth chukker.
Eight-goaler Sapo Caset added two goals and Allaria finished with one for Reata. Patron Al Micallef did not score. Roldan led Pony Express (1-1) with five goals while Rookie Bailleau added two goals.
Eight-goaler Sugar Erskine led ERG (2-0) with five goals while Pablo Spinacci and Robert Gonzalez scored four goals apiece. Ten-goaler Carlos Gracida led Airstream (1-2) with eight goals while Memo Gracida added two goals.
New Bridge La Dolfina jumped out to a 5-1 lead early in the second chukker and fought off Catamount’s rally to register the victory. Matias Magrini scored four goals for the winners (2-0). Jeff Blake led Catamount (0-2) with five goals while Jeff Hall added four goals and Todd Offen had three goals. Patron Scott Devon had one goal.
Patron Victor Vargas and Tomas del Rio scored back-to-back goals early in the sixth chukker to give Lechuza Caracas a 13-11 lead, which they never relinquished. Del Rio finished with three goals, Vargas had two and Gaston Urturi had one goal.
Seven-goaler Toto Collardin led San Saba (0-2) with seven goals, including three consecutive scores to tie the game at 11-11 going into the sixth chukker. Javier Novillo Astrada two goals and Tommy Lee Jones and Inaki Echezeretta had one goal apiece for San Saba.
Action in the Ylvisaker Cup continues today (Tuesday) with a pair of games, both at 11 a.m. Bendabout (0-2) plays TechnoMarine (0-1) and White Birch (1-0) plays Audi (0-1).
The Ylvisaker Cup in named in honor of William T. “Bill” Ylvisaker, a polo pioneer who founded Palm Beach Polo and Country Club in the late 1970s. A former Chairman of the USPA, Ylvisaker was elected into the Polo Hall of Fame in 1996. Ylvisaker, whose highest handicap was 7 goals, has won numerous major polo tournaments, including the prestigious U.S. Open in 1972.
The polo matches are open to the public. General admission for the Sunday games at International Polo Club Palm Beach is $10 for adults. Children under 12 enter for free. Tickets may be purchased at the gate on the day of the game.
