White Birch Defeats Audi 7-6 in Overtime in Ylvisaker Cup Action

WELLINGTON, FL (February 7, 2006) – Ten-goaler Mariano Aguerre scored on a 20-yard forehand with 3:42 left in overtime to lift White Birch over Audi 7-6 in a 22-goal Ylvisaker Cup polo match Tuesday at International Polo Club Palm Beach.

In other action, 6-goaler Magoo Laprida scored five goals to lead TechnoMarine over Bendabout 11-8.

Aguerre scored on a breakaway with 39 seconds left in the game to tie the score at 6-6 and send it into overtime. It was the fifth tie of the game.

Eight-goaler Juan Bollini gave Audi a 6-5 lead with 4:15 left in the game when he dribbled down the middle through three players. White Birch missed several scoring opportunities before Aguerre’s tying score.

Aguerre finished with a team-high four goals for White Birch (2-0) while Julio Gracida added two goals and Miguelito Torres had one goal. Cali Garcia, substituting for patron Peter Brant who was away on business, did not score.
Kris Kampsen led Audi (0-2) with three goals while Hector Galindo added two goals and Bollini scored one. Patron Marc Ganzi did not score. Galindo scored back-to-back goals in a 52-second span to give Audi a 5-4 lead with 1:43 left in the fifth chukker.
The game was marred by 29 fouls, 18 against White Birch. Audi made 3-of-5 penalty shots while White Birch converted 2-of-6 penalty shots.
TechnoMarine (1-1) scored four consecutive goals in the fourth chukker, two each by 7-goaler Luis Escobar and Laprida, to break a 5-5 halftime tie and coast to victory. Escobar finished with four goals and 9-goaler Adam Snow had two goals. Patron Franck Dubarry did not score.    
Ten-goaler Miguel Novillo Astrada led Bendabout (0-3) with six goals while Will Johnston and Lucas Monteverde had one goal apiece. Patron Gillian Johnston did not score.

Action in the Ylvisaker Cup continues today (Wednesday) first-place Skeeterville (2-0) plays Lechuza Caracas (1-1) at 3 p.m.

The Ylvisaker Cup in named in honor of William T. “Bill” Ylvisaker, a polo pioneer who founded Palm Beach Polo and Country Club in the late 1970s. A former Chairman of the USPA, Ylvisaker was elected into the Polo Hall of Fame in 1996. Ylvisaker, whose highest handicap was 7 goals, has won numerous major polo tournaments, including the prestigious U.S. Open in 1972.

The polo matches are open to the public. General admission for the Sunday games at International Polo Club Palm Beach is $10 for adults. Children under 12 enter for free. Tickets may be purchased at the gate on the day of the game.
