WELLINGTON, FL (February 8, 2006) Eight-goaler Julio Arellano scored seven goals to lead Skeeterville over Lechuza Caracas 10-7 in a 22-goal Ylvisaker Cup action Wednesday at International Polo Club Palm Beach. Skeeterville remains in first place with a 3-0 record.
Arellano scored three consecutive goals in the first chukker and Skeeterville never trailed in the game.
Lechuza Caracas battled back to within 7-6 on Gaston Urturi’s goal with 5:01 left in the fifth chukker but could not get the tying goal. Skeeterville responded and virtually clinched the victory when Arellano scored two goals in a 69-second span to end the fifth. He added a 60-yard penalty shot with 5:58 left in the sixth chukker to give Skeeterville a 10-6 advantage.
Owen Rinehart, Stevie Orthwein and patron Skeeter Johnston scored one goal apiece for Skeeterville.
Ten-goaler Sebastian Merlos led Lechuza Caracas (1-2) with four goals while Tomas del Rio added two goals and Urturi had one goal. Patron Victor Vargas did not score.
Action in the Ylvisaker Cup continues today (Thursday) with three games Reata (2-0) plays New Bridge La Dolfina (2-0) at 1 p.m. followed by Catamount (0-2) against TechnoMarine (1-1) at 3 p.m. and ending with ERG (2-0) against defending champion Pony Express (1-1) at 4 p.m.
The Ylvisaker Cup in named in honor of William T. “Bill” Ylvisaker, a polo pioneer who founded Palm Beach Polo and Country Club in the late 1970s. A former Chairman of the USPA, Ylvisaker was elected into the Polo Hall of Fame in 1996. Ylvisaker, whose highest handicap was 7 goals, has won numerous major polo tournaments, including the prestigious U.S. Open in 1972.
The polo matches are open to the public. General admission for the Sunday games at International Polo Club Palm Beach is $10 for adults. Children under 12 enter for free. Tickets may be purchased at the gate on the day of the game.
