WELLINGTON, FL (February 9, 2006) Ten-goaler Adolfo Cambiaso and 9-goaler Matias Magrini scored eight goals each as New Bridge La Dolfina dominated Reata 16-8 in a 22-goal Ylvisaker Cup polo match Thursday at International Polo Club Palm Beach. The victory moves New Bridge La Dolfina into undisputed possession of second place with a 3-0 record and a plus 10 net goals. Skeeterville remains in first place with a 3-0 record and a plus 15 net goals.
In other action, defending champion Pony Express defeated 2004 champ ERG 12-7 and TechnoMarine topped Catamount 8-7.
New Bridge La Dolfina’s 16 goals tied the most goals scored by one team and the eight goals tied for the second largest margin of victory in the 2006 tournament.
Reata trailed 5-3 after the second chukker before Magrini and Cambiaso put on a show to put away the game.
Magrini scored three unanswered goals in a 1:38 span late in the third chukker to give New Bridge La Dolfina an 8-3 halftime lead. Cambiaso responded with four consecutive goals in the fourth chukker to give New Bridge La Dolfina a 12-3 advantage with 3:25 remaining. Reata could not get closer than seven goals the rest of the game.
Sunny Hale and patron Russ McCall did not score for New Bridge La Dolfina. Ten-goaler Agustin Merlos and 8-goaler Sapo Caset scored four goals apiece for Reata (2-1). Santiago Allaria and patron Mike Micallef did not score.
Seven-goaler Nicolas Roldan scored five goals, including four in the second half to lead Pony Express (2-1). Rookie Baillieu added four goals while Gonzalo von Wernich scored two goals and patron Bob Daniels added one goal.
Roberto Gonzalez led ERG (2-1) with three goals while Pablo Spinacci scored two goals and Sugar Erskine had one goal. Patron Scott Wood did not score.
Luis Escobar and Adam Snow scored three goals each to lead TechnoMarine (2-1) while Magoo Laprida added two goals. Patron Franck Dubarry did not score. Jeff Blake led Catamount (0-3) with five goals and Todd Offen scored two goals. Patron Scott Devon and Jeff Hall did not score.
Action in the Ylvisaker Cup continues Saturday as first-place Skeeterville (3-0) plays No. 3 White Birch (2-0) at 10 a.m. There will be four games on Sunday, including the featured 3 p.m. match with Reata (2-1) against TechnoMarine (2-1) in which the winner has an outside chance to qualify for the semifinals.
The Ylvisaker Cup in named in honor of William T. “Bill” Ylvisaker, a polo pioneer who founded Palm Beach Polo and Country Club in the late 1970s. A former Chairman of the USPA, Ylvisaker was elected into the Polo Hall of Fame in 1996. Ylvisaker, whose highest handicap was 7 goals, has won numerous major polo tournaments, including the prestigious U.S. Open in 1972.
The polo matches are open to the public. General admission for the Sunday games at International Polo Club Palm Beach is $10 for adults. Children under 12 enter for free. Tickets may be purchased at the gate on the day of the game.
