WELLINGTON, FL (February 16, 2006) Eight-goaler Julio Arellano scored seven goals to lead No. 1 Skeeterville over perennial powerhouse White Birch 13-10 in the semifinals of the 22-goal Ylvisaker Cup Thursday at International Polo Club Palm Beach.
In the second semifinal, 10-goaler Adolfo Cambiaso scored eight goals to lead New Bridge La Dolfina over defending champion Pony Express 13-6.
Top-seeded Skeeterville (5-0) plays No. 2 New Bridge La Dolfina (5-0) Sunday at 3 p.m. on Stanford Field at International Polo Club.
Skeeterville scored the first two goals and never trailed, jumping out to a 7-3 halftime advantage. White Birch cut the margin to 12-10 with 2:01 left in the game on Julio Gracida’s tap-in following a long pass from Mariano Aguerre.
On the ensuing series, Skeeterville patron Skeeter Johnston controlled the ball in traffic and scored with 1:15 remaining to clinch the victory.
Arellano praised the entire team, especially patron Skeeter Johnston.
“He’s been working so hard to give us room (by spreading the defense) and that gives him time,” said Arellano.
Skeeterville’s Stevie Orthwein, who played well defensively, had a good view of his team’s offense.
“Our two guys (Arellano and Owen Rinehart) in the middle were jumping,” said Orthwein. “Julio played great; we all are, but he is for sure.
“I tried to stay back more,” said Orthwein, who played a more offensive role in the opening chukker before dropping into the traditional No. 4 position.
Johnston finished with four goals and Rinehart had two. Orthwein did not score.
Ten-goaler Mariano Aguerre led White Birch (3-2) with five goals while Gracida scored three goals and Miguelito Torres added two goals. Patron Peter Brant did not score.
Pony Express scored the first goal but New Bridge La Dolfina responded with three goals and never trailed the rest of the game.
Nine-goaler Matias Magrini added three goals for New Bridge La Dolfina and Sunny Hale scored two goals. Patron Russ McCall did not score.
Nicolas Roldan led Pony Express (3-2) with four goals and Rookie Baillieu added two goals. Gonzalo Von Wernich and patron Bob Daniels did not score.
The Ylvisaker Cup in named in honor of William T. “Bill” Ylvisaker, a polo pioneer who founded Palm Beach Polo and Country Club in the late 1970s. A former Chairman of the USPA, Ylvisaker was elected into the Polo Hall of Fame in 1996. Ylvisaker, whose highest handicap was 7 goals, has won numerous major polo tournaments, including the prestigious U.S. Open in 1972.
The polo matches are open to the public. General admission for the Sunday games at International Polo Club Palm Beach is $10 for adults. Children under 12 enter for free. Tickets may be purchased at the gate on the day of the game.
