WELLINGTON, FL (February 28, 2006) Nine-goaler Eduardo Heguy and 8-goaler Sugar Erskine scored four goals each to lead Isla Carroll over Orchard Hill 11-8 in the quarterfinals of the single-elimination 26-goal Hall of Fame Cup Tuesday at International Polo Club Palm Beach.
Skeeterville plays New Bridge La Dolfina Thursday at 1 p.m. in the first semifinal match followed by Pony Express against Isla Carroll at 3 p.m. The final is scheduled for Sunday at 3 p.m. on Stanford Field at International Polo Club.
Isla Carroll scored four unanswered goals in the fifth chukker, two by Erskine, to break open a close game and take an 11-5 lead heading into the final period. Isla Carroll scored three goals in a 2:36 span en route to a 10-5 lead. Erskine scored on a breakaway with 37 seconds left to virtually clinch the game.
Orchard Hill battled back with three goals in the final chukker, but it was too little, too late with the final score coming with less than two minutes remaining.
Isla Carroll scored the first three goals of the game, one each by Heguy, Erskine and Pepe Heguy. The closest Orchard Hill came was 7-5, on Hector Galindo’s goal with 42 seconds remaining in the fourth chukker.
Pepe Heguy finished with three goals while patron John Goodman did not score for Isla Carroll, which received a first-round bye.
Nine-goaler Paco de Narvaez led Orchard Hill (1-1) with five goals and Galindo finished with two goals. Jeff Hall and patron Steve Van Andel did not score.
The tournament is named in honor of the National Museum of Polo and Hall of Fame, a 501(c)(3) non-profit educational organization dedicated to the preservation of the history and tradition of the sport of polo. The Museum houses an extensive collection of historic documents and treasures that include important trophies, artifacts, books, works of art and other memorabilia. The Hall of Fame, located in Lake Worth, Florida, was created to honor the heroes of the sport.
The polo matches are open to the public. General admission for the Sunday games at International Polo Club Palm Beach is $10 for adults. Children under 12 enter for free. Tickets may be purchased at the gate on the day of the game.
