Eleven months after a paralyzing fall in the Birla Cup at Rambagh Polo Ground, Shivraj Singh, 30, is out of a coma and recuperating at home in Jodhpur’s Umaid Bhawan Palace, the Times of India reports. The sole heir to India’s former royal family sustained serious head injuries Feb. 18 when he was trapped beneath his horse and remained hospitalized for months at Bombay hospital, as reported earlier on ThePoloZONE.com.
Singh, a three-goaler who competed for eight years, is now able to speak in short sentences, and is mobile with the assistance of a wheelchair, according to the report. The prince appeared publicly at a party held on the Baradari Lawns Jan. 13, but watched from his balcony. The party honored his father, Maharaja Gaj Singh, on his 58th birthday.
“I wam working towards getting back into shape,” he told the newspaper. “I feel good.”
Shivranjani Raje, the prince’s sister, told reporters he is active and rehabilitating with the help of an American occupational physiotherapist. Family members including his mother, Hemlata Rajye remain hopeful for a complete recovery.
“He goes to the office in the morning at 10 a.m. and comes home for lunch and then rests in the afternoon… In the evenings, our cousins and friends come over or we go out,” she said.
The prince can reportedly walk with some assistance, family members said in the report.
