New Bridge La Dolfina Edges Reata 13-12 in Joe Barry Memorial Cup action
at International Polo Club Palm Beach on Thursday
WELLINGTON, FL (January 19, 2006) – Ten-goaler Adolfo Cambiaso and 9-goaler Matias Magrini scored five goals each to lead New Bridge La Dolfina over Reata 13-12 in the 22-goal Joe Barry Memorial Cup Thursday at International Polo Club Palm Beach.

In other Joe Barry Memorial Cup games, 6-goaler Jeff Blake scored eight goals to spark Catamount over Audi 15-10 and 8-goaler Julio Arellano scored five goals to lead Skeeterville past Pony Express 11-9.

New Bridge La Dolfina (1-0) was the only team to win while playing its first game of the season.
Cambiaso and Magrini scored back-to-back goals in the sixth chukker to snap an 11-11 tie. Santiago Allaria scored to cut the margin to 13-12 but Reata could not get the tying goal before time ran out.

New Bridge La Dolfina was 7-for-7 in penalty shots while Reata made only 3-of-6 penalty shots.
Three-goaler Sunny Hale, who was added to the lineup the night before, added two goals for the winners and patron Russ McCall scored one goal.

Ten-goaler Agustin Merlos led Reata (0-2) with six goals while Sapo Caset added five goals and Allaria finished with one goal. Patron Mike Micallef did not score.

Catamount scored five unanswered goals, two each by Todd Offen and Jeff Hall to break open an 8-8 tie. The other goal was via a Penalty 1. There were three ties in the game but Audi never led.

Eight-goaler Hall finished with four goals for Catamount (1-1) while Offen finished with two goals. Patron Scott Devon did not score. Eight-goaler Hector Galindo led Audi (0-1) with four goals while Juan Bollini and Kris Kampsen scored three goals apiece. Patron Marc Ganzi did not score.

“Today, we used all of our players,” said Blake, “and we cut down on our mistakes. (Patron) Scott’s (Devon) a huge part of the team and we didn’t use him the right way (in Sunday’s 13-10 to Lechuza Caracas). He’s another target for us.”

Skeeterville also made a big turnaround from its opening game loss.

Eight-goaler Owen Rinehart and Stevie Orthwein finished with three goals each for Skeeterville (1-1) while patron Skeeter Johnston did not score. Seven-goaler Nicolas Roldan led Pony Express (0-1) with six goals while Gonzalo von Wernich scored two goals and patron Marc Daniels added one goal. Tomas Goti did not score.

“We were slow,” said Rinehart, referring to Skeeterville’s first game. “We watched the tape and saw how slow we were. So we picked it up (against Pony Express).”

The Joe Barry Memorial Cup tournament continues Sunday with a tripleheader. First place and a spot in the semifinals is on the line when New Bridge La Dolfina (1-0) plays Airstream (1-0) in the featured game on Stanford Field at 3 p.m. The action begins at 10 a.m. when Audi plays Lechuza Caracas (1-0) followed by Pony Express against Techno Marine (1-0) at noon.

The Joe Barry Memorial Cup is named after American polo legend Joe Barry, who died on May 18, 2002 at the age of 58. Born and raised in Texas, he achieved a 9-goal rating and dominated polo in the United States in the 1960s and 1970s. Barry won six U.S. Open championships, three Gold Cups, three Silver Cups as well as the Coronation and Camacho Cup trophies. One of the greatest No. 4s in polo history, Joe Barry was elected to the Polo Hall of Fame in 1999.

The polo matches are open to the public. General admission for the Sunday games at International Polo Club Palm Beach is $10 for adults. Children under 12 enter for free. Tickets may be purchased at the gate on the day of the game.
