Joe Barry Memorial Cup Resumes with Semifinals
at International Polo Club
WELLINGTON, FL (January 24, 2006) – It’s the first Final Four of the high-goal polo season with the semifinals of the 22-goal Joe Barry Memorial Cup at International Polo Club Palm Beach. The final is Sunday at 3 p.m. on Stanford Field at International Polo Club.

Division III champion New Bridge La Dolfina (2-0), led by superstar Adolfo Cambiaso, plays Catamount (1-1) Wednesday at 10:30 a.m. in the first semifinal.

Cambiaso, in 1993 at the age of 17, became the youngest 10-goaler in the history of the sport. The five-time U.S. Open champion, who turns 31 on April 14, leads the league in scoring with 19 goals in two games.

Cambiaso is joined by 9-goaler Matias Magrini, who is second on the team with eight goals, along with patron Russ McCall and 3-goaler Sunny Hale. McCall and Magrini are co-owners of the New Bridge Polo Club in Aiken, South Carolina, which hosted the 2005 USPA Gold Cup.

Despite his team’s 18-15 victory over Airstream in which Cambiaso scored 14 goals, Cambiaso sees room for improvement.

“We can play better,” Cambiaso said. “We were a bit slow (against Airstream) and we lost some throw-ins.”

Before the semifinals were announced, Cambiaso says the match-ups didn’t matter.
“To be the best, you have to play everyone.”

Catamount features 8-goaler Jeff Hall and 6-goaler Jeff Blake, who leads the team with 12 goals. Hall is second on the team with eight goals. They are joined by 3-goaler Scott Devon, the highest-rated patron in the tournament, and 5-goaler Todd Offen.

The second semifinal – Pony Express (1-1) against Lechuza Caracas (1-1) – will be played Thursday at 3 p.m.

Pony Express is led by 7-goaler Nicolas Roldan with 13 goals, fourth highest in the tournament. Roldan is joined by 7-goaler Gonzalo Von Wernich, 6-goaler Tomas Goti and patron Marc Daniels, a 2-goaler. Lechuza Caracas features 10-goaler Sebastian Merlos, who has five goals, and 5-goaler Gaston Urturi, who has a team-high seven goals. They are joined by 5-goaler Tomas del Rio and patron Victor Vargas, a 2-goaler.

Carlos Gracida of Airstream finished with 18 goals in two games, second highest in the tourney, and Agustin Merlos of Reata scored 14 goals in the tournament. Neither team advanced to the semifinals.
