June 18th '06: The final of the Queens Cup, sponsored by Cartier, and in the presence of Her Majesty the Queen, in her 80th year, was a fast and exciting game. This is a premier high goal tournament and sixteen teams have taken part with Dubai and Broncos reaching the final.

This tournament has been traditionally played at Guards Polo Club, Smith’s Lawn at Windsor Great Park for over 45 years and Her Majesty the Queen first donated the Cup to the Club in 1960.
The 10,000 spectators took their seats at 3 pm on a very hot and balmy Sunday afternoon to watch what promised to be a high octane game. Playing for the Dubai team, who won the Queens Cup in 2005, was Tariq Albwardy (1), Pike Diaz-Alberdi (9), Adolfo Cambiaso (10) and George Meyrick (2) who is just 19 and playing in his first Queens Cup Final. Playing for the Broncos were Lord Milford-Haven (1), Facundo Pieres (9), Gonzalo Pieres Jnr (8) and Gareth Evans (4).

With a handicap of 22 for the Broncos and 21 for Dubai, Dubai had a one goal start, they took the lead in the first chukka scoring two further goals within minutes and at the end of the first chukka were leading 4-1, but by the end of the second chukka, they had decreased Dubai’s lead to 5-4 to Dubai. In the third chukka, play came to a halt when Piki had a bad fall and had to seek medical assistance but soon recovered and by half time and the end of the third chukka Dubai were still leading 7-6.
The spectating crowd were then invited to dread the divots and this year with an added bonus, Cartier had hidden eight watches on the field for people to find!

The second half and fourth chukka saw both teams neck and neck at 7-7, then 8-8 but by the end of the chukka Dubai lead 9-8. The fifth chukka saw a fantastic goal by Gareth Evans and what had to be the goal of the match by Adolfo Cambiaso. Going into the sixth chukka, Dubai kept their lead and won the final 12-11.
Her Majesty The Queen presented the Queens Cup to Tariq Albwardy, the Captain of Dubai. No one was surprised when Adolfo Cambiaso won the Man of the Match. Arnaud Bamberger, the Managing Director of Cartier UK presented Her Majesty The Queen with a present for her 80th birthday.
