The level of play at the 2006 Collegiate National was fantastic. The level of sportsmanship and comradery was outstanding.
Games were hard fought on the field, but that was where the competition ended. Teams assisted each other throughout the week in the barn and socialized in the evenings when the work was done. The Yale Women's Polo Team helped get things started early in the week by generously hosting a social for players, parents, coaches and friends.
Sixty of the east coasts finest college ponies played in the tournament. Thank you to Cornell University, the University of Connecticut, the University of Virginia, and Yale for providing horses for this event.
Cornell University did a fantastic job hosting the collegiate championship. The arena was packed full of polo fans for Saturday's final matches. Dave Eldrege and staff were wonderful in accommodating 13 collegiate teams from across the country. Food and refreshments for players and fans were generously provided by Wendy Wicker throughout the tournament. Thanks to Jean Proto and Kim and Chris Grant for their able assistance with clock and score keeping.
Umpires Steve Lane, Billy Sheldon, and Tom Goodspeed were on hand to officiate games.
Tournament committee members Ed Armstrong, Lynn Thompson and Dr. Bruce Wells were joined by honored guests, Peter Rizzo and Dan Calhoun for the festivities and final matches.
Danny Scheraga emceed Friday evening's banquet where polo alumni were also on hand to celebrate the 30th Anniversary of the USPA Women's Polo Championship. Alumni chukkers had been played earlier in the day.
Mallet bags were donated by La Martina for tournament winners and tailgate boxes were donated by Eques Ltd. for sportsmanship recipients.
Congratulations to the University of Connecticut Women and Texas Tech University Men!
