May 15th, '06: The latest from the Detroit Polo Club . . .
The DPC is happy to welcome new members, Mark Pilukas, a local custom building contractor and Aga Bednarz, M.D., currently in a gastroenterology fellowship program at the University of Michigan Hospital in Ann Arbor. Mark is also starting his 13 year old son Caleb stick and balling. Aga, originally from Poznan, Poland, has been riding since she was a child and is taking to polo like a duck to water.
Returnees from Florida for the DPC summer season are club founder Merle Jenkins, two goal grandson Colin Mc Cosh, his pro and longtime DPC favorite - Gary Eakin. Bill Patterson, D.V.M. and Roger Redman will also be back to resume play at the club as will Verdell Mathais. Maureen Safian is also joining the club after club president Chet Regula enticed her to a USPA polo clinic last year. Tony Natale, who usually plays in Chicago or San Diego, will also join the fun at DPC this summer while on a business project in Detroit.
Jerry Hutcheson, long time player and announcer also informs us that the DPC in conjunction with Henry Ford Health System are sponsoring a unique, fun and exciting Charity Polo Event to benefit the Henry Ford Fairlane Medical Center in Dearborn, MI on Sunday, July 30th. The match will be held on the beautiful Ford Motor Company World Headquarters campus. There will be a star-studded VIP Cocktail Reception the evening before the event and a Celebrity Champagne Brunch (catered by the nearby Ritz-Carleton Hotel) the morning of the event. New vehicle displays, celebrities from the Detroit Tigers, Detroit Red Wings, Detroit Pistons and the Detroit Lions plan to be on hand. Some of the activities will include children's pony rides, a ladies hat contest, mounted Sheriff's Patrol, a celebrity wooden horse ball hitting contest and an auction with many outstanding items. Primary event sponsors are Ford Motor Company and AAA Michigan.
