RESULTS - WORLD CUP POLO
WEDNESDAY 4TH APRIL
USA (10
) VS INDIA (8)
Group B at the World Cup Polo has been thrown wide open today
with a win by America over India in Match 1 at Werribee Park,
Melbourne.
America were comfortable winners
over India in a fast and furious match. Final scores were: 10
- 8
American players Chris Nevins
Number (1), Carluchio Arallano (2) and Dale Schwetz (3) showed
their impeccable sportsmanship with 3 goals each to their credit.
Indian players Angad Kalaan
(2) and Dhruv Pal Godara (3) played great polo with 2 goals each
- however it wasn't to be a winning day for them, despite a late
surge.
America and Australia have
emerged as the two surprise packets of this tournament and may
play each other in the semi finals on Friday dependant on results
later today. The raw youth and exhurberance of the Americans
and the solid dependability of the Australians would make for
a fascinating match.
Match 2 this afternoon between
Argentina and England will decide the semi finalist to go through
t to Friday.
Should Argentina beat or tie
with England they will go straight through with America. Under
the Federation of International Polo count back system England
must win by 2 goals to secure a place at the expense of Argentina.
If England win by less that two goals it will not be enough to
get through to the final.

RESULTS - WORLD CUP POLO
WEDNESDAY 4TH APRIL
Argentina
8 vs
England 12
In a remarkable boilover at
Werribee Park this afternoon England have defeated reigning world
champion Argentina 12 - 8 and put them out of the tournament
semi finals for the first time in the history of the World Cup.
England was behind for most
of the match until early in the 5th chukka when they took the
lead after magnificent play from their number 4 Malcolm Borwick.
From that point Argentina seemed
to panic and the cool English drove home their advantage with
some inspiring plays.
Slowly they crept to the required 4 goal margin to assure their
place in the semi final and when Mark Tomlinson (son of the English
coach Claire) took the ball almost the full length of the field
for a brilliant goal 30 seconds from time England were home.
This result has stunned everyone
around the event. The Argentineans were red hot favourites for
the title and now must watch their less fancied opponents fight
out the semi finals on Friday.
Matches on Friday will
be as follows:
Australia Vs England at 1.00 pm
USA Vs Brazil at 3.00 pm.
