USPA Arena Pacific Coast Circuit Sherman Memorial Cup
By Russ Sheldon
Poway Polo Club hosted the 2003 USPA Arena Pacific Coast Circuit Sherman Memorial Cup Oct. 18 - 19. On Saturday the first game was Poway (Steve Bradford B, Sherry Sheldon 1, Mark Register 4) vs. California Polo (Chuck Stanislavski A, Manny Questel A, Domingo Questel 6) with lead changing hands thru the first three chukkers until California Polo pulled away in the fourth chukker to win a tough game 16 - 11.
The second game pitted Leather CPR (Darren Zuzow B, Cary Burch 1, Billy Sheldon 6) vs. Playa Grande Polo (Heather Schuberth A, Claudio Manfrin 1, Theo Wakefield 2) Playa Grande came out hot winning the first chukker 5-3m leading at the half 7-6, but the third was Leather CPR taking the lead 13-8 and finally winning 16-12 in another well played game. Then the fun began with a game between Poway (Andrew, Annie, Mark and Nancy) vs. San Diego Polo (Tyler, Carey, Russ and Kathy) with San Diego prevailing 11 - 5 with both teams receiving pointers and encouragement from the Sidelines, Tom Goodspeed, Billy Sheldon, Domingo Questel all telling them what to do. The game was umpired by Shane Rice and Manny Questel who showed no mercy in calling the fouls.
The second day kicked off with another fun game Loco Gringos (Shane/Mark, Russ, Kathy) vs. Rinky Dinks (Addy, Annie, Nancy) the first chukker belonged to the Rinky Dinks 3-2 but then Shane scored a 2 point goal in the second, with Russ scoring 2 - 2 pointers in the third to pull away and win 12 - 6, but again with all the encouragement from the sidelines.
The Sherman Memorial Cup Consultation game pitted Playa Grande vs. Poway with Playa Grande coming out smoking and pulling away to a 14 - 6 win. The pointers they picked up at the group Dinner Saturday night were put to good use and while the score did show how close the game was it was an exceptional well played game.
The finals pitted California Polo vs. Leather CPR with Billy Sheldon scoring 5 with Leather CPR taking a first chukker lead of 7 - 2, but California Polo showed what a heart their team had, battling back to a Leather CPR win 15-13. The horsemanship and polo playing ability of the players made this an awesome game to watch as shown in the photo's on PoloBARN. Super job Lynn. MVP was awarded to Billy Sheldon, Best Playing Pony, Bones owned/ridden by Billy Sheldon. These two awards where very tough to decide and could have gone to several people for the way they played. Thanks to Shane Rice for Umpiring 6 games in two days. We really appreciate everyone who came to play and it was a good time for everyone. See you next year.
