24 Teams Entered for Tribal Cup Women’s Polo Tournament

WELLINGTON, FL –February 3, 2005 -Twenty-four teams have entered the fourth annual Tribal Cup, the world’s largest all-women’s polo tournament, which will conclude with a four-chukker exhibition match on Monday, February 14 at 4 p.m. at International Polo Club Palm Beach.

“The Tribal Cup offers a new model for the game of polo, providing an equal playing field for women,” said Barbara Savage, president of the Tribal Cup Foundation. “The relaxed atmosphere fosters sportsmanship and philanthropy and it’s a unique experience for spectators.”

Tickets are $10 each for the exhibition polo match and can be purchased at the IPC gate.

The exhibition match features Bombardier Aerospace (Sunny Hale, Maureen Brennan, Jolie Liston and Cathy Brown) against Springbok (Alina Carta, Clarissa Echezaretta, Gillian Johnston and Julie Boyle) at 4 p.m. on Field 2 at International Polo Club.

Following the exhibition match, the Tribal Trust Foundation will host the “Enlightened Heart” Valentine’s Day Cocktail Party after the polo match, which includes the trophy presentation, a keynote speaker, a live auction and an international cocktail buffet in the Grand Marquee.

Tickets for the cocktail party (which include a ticket to watch the polo game) are $100, and can be purchased from Marlene Ashdown at (561) 315-4232.  Tickets may also be purchased at the Phelps Media Group offices on the Winter Equestrian Festival showgrounds until the day of the competition, Idlewild Stables in Wellington on Sunday, Feb. 6, and at the Players Club in Wellington on Wednesday, February 9.

Many of the top women’s players in the world will be participating, including Sunny Hale, Alina Carta, Gillian Johnston, Sylvia Firestone, Karen Pimsner and Julie Boyle.

Other players already signed up include noted polo photographer Shelley Heatley, Leigh Butterworth, Amy Azzaro, Yvette Biddle, Olexa Celine, Michi Gracida, Kris Bowman, Renee Wollenman, Chloe Bourgeois, Allison Henderson, Tiffany Busch, Lydia Bibeau, Josefina Gonzalez, Nicole Caset and Celina Merlos.

The Phelps Media Group (PMG) team features international show jumper Georgina Bloomberg, noted amateur equestrian Kelly Klein, Jenny Dunion and Jennifer Wood of the PMG staff.
